How Much Lumber Do I Need for a Raised Garden Bed?

Six boards for an 8×4 bed — and the bed will be 14½ inches tall, not the 12 you designed. That difference is a fifth more soil than you planned to buy.

A 2×8 is not eight inches wide

It's 7¼ inches. And that one fact quietly decides how tall your bed ends up, how many boards you buy, and — the expensive one — how much soil you need.

Design an 8×4 bed at 12 inches tall, build it from 2×8s, and you get a bed 14½ inches tall needing about a fifth more soil than you planned for.

Nominal vs actual, and why

Lumber is named for its rough sawn size, then dried and planed smooth on all four sides. Both take material off. What you take home:

Every one of them is 1½ inches thick, not 2. The convention is that 2×4s and 2×6s lose half an inch of width, while 2×8s and up lose three quarters.

The height you get isn't the height you asked for

You can only stack whole boards. So the courses — rows of board up the side — are your target height divided by the real board width, rounded up.

12 ÷ 7.25 = 1.66 → 2 courses

2 × 7.25 = 14½ inches tall

You can't build a 12-inch bed from 2×8s at all. Your options are 7¼ or 14½. (A single course of 2×12 gives you 11¼, which is often near enough and a great deal less work.)

The bit that costs money

The soil follows the actual height, not the one you typed:

8 × 4 × (14.5 ÷ 12) = 38.7 cubic feet — about 1.43 cubic yards

At the 12 inches you designed, it'd be 32 cubic feet. That's 20.8% more soil than your plan.

Soil is usually the biggest line on the receipt for a raised bed, and ordering against the design height rather than the built height is the single most common way these projects run short. Check the actual height before you order.

Counting boards by pieces, not footage

Total linear feet is the wrong way to count this, because boards come in fixed lengths and you can't always use the offcuts.

For an 8×4 bed, two courses high:

  • Long sides: 4 pieces at 8 ft. One 8 ft board each → 4 boards
  • Short sides: 4 pieces at 4 ft. Two per 8 ft board → 2 boards

6 boards. Total footage would have said 48 ÷ 8 = 6 too, in this case — but that's a coincidence of the numbers. Make the bed 12 ft long and footage-counting understates it badly, because a 12 ft side can't come out of an 8 ft board and the leftover 4 ft pieces don't always fit anything.

The calculator counts pieces and works out how many fit per board, and where a side is longer than the board it allows a whole board per part rather than assuming an offcut will do.

Buy one more than it says

Nothing here models the board that turns out bowed, the cut that goes wrong, or the corner you rebuild because it wasn't square.

One spare board costs a few dollars. A second trip to the yard costs an afternoon.

Two things the calculator doesn't cover

Stakes along the long sides. Four corner posts hold the corners, and the tool gives you the total post length for those. But a bed longer than about six feet will bow outward in the middle once the soil is wet and heavy. That wants a stake or two partway along, and how many depends on your timber and your soil.

Which wood to use. That's a judgement, not a calculation. Cedar and redwood resist rot naturally and cost more; untreated pine is cheap and will need replacing sooner. Modern pressure-treated lumber uses different preservatives from the older CCA formulations, and whether to use it around food crops is something people decide differently — worth reading up on properly rather than taking any calculator's word for it.

Sizing the bed itself

Keep the width to about 4 feet. That's not aesthetic — it's so you can reach the middle from either side without standing on the soil and compacting it. Against a wall where you can only reach from one side, make it 2 to 2½.

Length is up to you and your timber. Height depends on what you're growing: 6 inches suits most greens, 12 or more is worth it for root crops or if bending is a problem.
