How Much Paint for Kitchen Cabinets?
A 20-door kitchen is 156 sq ft — 0.89 gallons for two coats. One tin buys the job. The paint was never the expensive part.
One gallon. That's it.
A twenty-door kitchen with eight drawer fronts and 25 sq ft of face frames comes to 156 sq ft of surface.
At 350 sq ft per gallon, two coats:
156 × 2 ÷ 350 = 0.89 gallons.
One tin. The reason that feels wrong is that a kitchen looks big — but cabinet doors are small, and there are only so many of them.
The calculator also gives you the figure in quarts — 3.6 here — because cabinet enamel is sold in quarts too, and a bathroom vanity or a small galley kitchen genuinely may not need a full gallon. Buying a gallon of custom-tinted enamel for four doors is how a shelf of half-used tins starts.

Count doors, not linear feet
Cabinet runs get quoted in linear feet. Paint doesn't go onto linear feet, it goes onto faces.
So count the door fronts, count the drawer fronts, measure a typical one of each, and add the face frames.
And then the one distinction that carries most of the arithmetic:
- Doors get two faces. You see the inside of a door every single time you open it.
- Drawer fronts get one. The back of a drawer front sits inside the cabinet box where nobody will ever look at it.
Get that backwards in either direction and the answer is badly out. On this kitchen the doors' second face alone is 62.5 sq ft — 40% of the entire job, hiding behind a decision about whether to bother.
The doors are 80% of it
Doors, both faces is 125 sq ft out of 156. The calculator reports that as a share for a reason: 80%.
Which means the face frames — the fiddly, endless, cut-in-by-hand part that takes a disproportionate share of your afternoon — are a small fraction of the material. 25 sq ft out of 156.
Time and paint are not distributed the same way on this job. Almost nothing about cabinet painting is intuitive in that respect.
So why does everyone say it's such a big job?
Because the paint isn't the cost. Twenty-eight pieces is the cost.
Every one of them has to come off, be labelled, be degreased, be sanded, be primed, be coated twice per side, and then dry somewhere without touching anything else.
That last one is the constraint nobody plans for. Twenty-eight doors and drawer fronts, laid flat, not touching, for as long as it takes — that's a garage floor or a lot of improvised racking. The calculator gives you the pieces to label and dry count because it's the number that actually decides whether this fits in a weekend.
It doesn't fit in a weekend.
Degrease before you sand. Not after.
This is the step that decides whether the finish lasts a decade or peels in eighteen months.
Kitchen cabinets carry an invisible film of cooking grease. It's worst above the hob and beside the extractor, and paint will not stick to it. No primer solves it.
Wash with a degreaser, rinse properly, let it dry — then sand.
Sanding first drives the grease down into the open grain and seals it under your finish, where it will quietly ruin the adhesion of everything you put on top.
Primer, and two different wood problems
Sherwin-Williams' data sheet for Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel is explicit: always use the recommended P-Shade primer to optimise hide and colour development.
On cabinets it matters more than on a wall, for two reasons that people constantly conflate:
Tannin bleed is a stain. Some species — the data sheet names redwood and cedar, and knots in general — carry enough tannin to bleed brown up through a finish coat. It needs a stain-blocking primer. More topcoats make it worse, not better, because you're just adding time for it to travel.
Open grain is texture. Oak's problem isn't a stain at all. Its pores telegraph through paint as visible grooves, and priming does nothing about it because there's nothing chemically wrong — the surface is genuinely that shape. Grain filler is what fixes it, and only if you want a slab-smooth look. Plenty of people paint oak and keep the grain deliberately.
Diagnosing which one you have decides which product you buy.
Recoat is not the same as ready
The data sheet gives touch dry at 1 hour, recoat at 4 hours at 77°F.
Recoat is permission to put more paint on. It is not permission to reassemble a kitchen.
Hang doors back too early and the hinges and handles print into the film — a permanent dent you can only fix by sanding back and recoating. Give the last coat far longer than the recoat figure before you screw anything through it, and expect the finish to keep hardening for weeks after it stops feeling tacky.
If you're spraying, buy more
Coverage figures on a data sheet assume brush or roller.
Spraying loses real material to overspray, and leaves a meaningful amount behind in the gun, the hose and the pot. Drop the coverage input or just buy the next size up.
Running out mid-kitchen, with a custom-tinted colour, on a Sunday, is a genuinely bad afternoon.
