How to Convert a Lime Recommendation Into Bags

Your soil test gives a rate in pure calcium carbonate. Your bag isn't pure — at 75% CCE you need a third more than the report says.

Start with a soil test, or don't start

How much lime it takes to move pH depends on the soil's buffering capacity — which varies enormously with texture, clay type and organic matter. A sandy soil and a heavy clay can need several times different amounts for the same pH change.

That's precisely what a soil test measures, and it's why the report hands you a lime requirement rather than leaving you to derive one.

This page will not tell you that number, and nothing should except a test. Liming by guesswork is betting on a change that takes months to happen and years to undo.

Why the bag and the report disagree

A recommendation is quoted in calcium carbonate equivalent — CCE — because that's the only way to state a requirement independently of what you end up buying. Pure calcium carbonate is defined as 100%.

Real products aren't pure. So the conversion, which is the standard one extension services publish:

On a whole garden that's a real difference, and it's the step most often skipped between reading a report and buying a bag.

Check your units

Recommendations come per acre or per 1,000 square feet, and an acre is 43,560 sq ft — so the two are a factor of 43.56 apart.

This tool works in pounds per 1,000 sq ft. If yours is per acre, divide by 43.56 first, then check yourself against Your recommendation per acre, which converts back. If that doesn't match your report, the wrong unit went in.

Area to treat is the other half of that. A recommendation is a rate, not a quantity — it says nothing about how much you need until it meets the size of your plot. Measure the bed rather than estimating it, because the error scales: a 20% overestimate of the area is 20% more lime than the test asked for, applied to soil that will hold onto it.

Err low, then retest

This is the asymmetry that matters.

Under-liming means the pH moves less than you wanted. You test again and add more. Minor inconvenience.

Over-liming raises pH past your target, which locks up iron, manganese and other micronutrients — plants show deficiencies even though the nutrients are present. There's no quick way back down. Lowering pH is slow and works through a biological process that takes its own time.

So when in doubt, apply less than the full recommendation and retest.

Why it wants to split the application

Putting a very large rate down in one pass tends to raise the surface pH sharply while doing comparatively little further down, and on established turf a heavy application can scorch.

Applications to split it across uses your own single-pass ceiling — an input, because it depends on your situation and on local guidance. Your report or extension service will give you one.

Split applications should be separated by months, not days.

Lime is slow

It works as it dissolves, so the reaction is gradual. A change takes months and often isn't complete for a year or more.

Grind matters: finely ground material reacts faster than coarse, and pelletised lime is finely ground material bound into pellets that break down when wet. Incorporating it into the soil is much faster than leaving it on the surface.

The practical consequence: retest before concluding it didn't work, and don't add more in the meantime.

If you need to lower your pH

That's a different calculation and this tool doesn't attempt it.

Elemental sulphur — the usual material — works through a biological process rather than a chemical one, since soil bacteria oxidise it. The rate depends on soil temperature and microbial activity as well as buffering, and it isn't rated in CCE at all.

If your soil test calls for sulphur, it will come with its own rate and material guidance. Follow that.
