When Is Firewood Actually Ready to Burn?
Six months for softwood, a year for hardwood - and the clock starts the day you split it, not the day the tree came down.
Almost everything written about this contradicts itself
Search for how long firewood takes to season and you will be told six months, a year, two years and three years — for the same species. Those answers are not all wrong. They are describing different situations and not saying so, because split size, stacking, cover and climate all change the answer and most sources quietly assume their own.
So this calculator runs on the EPA's Burn Wise figures instead, for one reason: the EPA states the conditions its numbers apply under.
"Split, stack, cover and store your firewood for six months if it is a softwood, and at least one year for hardwoods."

The clock starts when you split it
This is the part that costs people a season, and the tool is deliberately blunt about it.
Hardwood, split and stacked three months ago, needed in six months:

Now untick "it is split" — same wood, same three months, still sitting in rounds:

Three months of waiting bought you nothing. The count resets rather than shrinking, because bark is the part of a tree specifically evolved to stop moisture leaving. A round log dries mainly through its two cut ends, and one left whole for a year can be barely drier than the day it came down.
If you have a pile of rounds that has sat for two seasons, the honest position is that your seasoning starts the day you split them.
The margin figure is the one that changes plans
Both readings above are negative, and that is the tool's most useful output. It is saying this stack will not make the baseline before you want to burn it.
That is not a disaster, it is a scheduling fact, and there is exactly one good response: buy seasoned wood for this year and let this stack become next year's.
Which is where everyone who burns wood ends up permanently — this year's wood was stacked last year, and this year's stacking is for next winter. Getting there costs one season of overlap, once, and then the problem never recurs because nothing you burn is ever new.
Switch the same stack to softwood and the picture flips: 3 months left, 50% through, and a margin of +3. Softwood is genuinely the answer to "I need firewood and I did not plan ahead."
The calculator will not tell you it is ready
Reaching zero months is a prompt to go and measure. It is not a verdict, and the tool never issues one.
"Wood burns best at a moisture content of less than 20 percent. Test wood with a wood moisture meter before you burn it."
That is the actual test. Enter a reading and the tool compares it to the 20% target — a softwood stack eight months in reading 17% comes back at −3 points, and negative is good. Leave the reading at 0 and the result is a dash, not a guess. No reading, no verdict.
⚠️ Meter a freshly split face, in the middle of a piece from the middle of the stack. The outside of any stack reads dry after a sunny afternoon and tells you nothing about the inside, which is where the remaining water is.
The tarp mistake
If you take one thing from this article, take this one.
"Store wood outdoors, off the ground, with only the top covered — covering the sides traps in moisture."
Wrapping a tarp down over the sides of a stack feels like looking after it and does the opposite. Rain is kept out, but so is the airflow that removes the water, and the stack sweats inside a plastic tent. It is worse than leaving the stack open to the weather.
Ground contact does the same thing from underneath, wicking moisture back into the bottom course. Rails, pallets or scrap timber fix it for free.
Why it counts your storage instead of penalising it
Untick everything and the tool reports 0 of 3 conditions met — and adds no extra months.
That is deliberate. The EPA publishes the seasoning times and the conditions they assume, but no figure for how much longer badly stored wood takes. Inventing a multiplier here would produce exactly the kind of confident-sounding number that makes the rest of the writing on this subject useless.
So a count below three does not change the calendar. It should change how much you trust it — stop treating it as meaningful for that stack and go straight to the meter. Then fix what is missing, because it costs nothing and the next stack will not have the same problem.
Wet wood is a safety question first
The water has to be boiled off before the wood itself can burn, so a wet fire runs cool and smoky and gives you noticeably less heat from the same stack.
That is the mild half. Unburnt smoke condenses in a cool flue as creosote, and creosote is the fuel in a chimney fire.
A moisture meter costs less than one bad flue clean, and it is the only thing in this entire subject that gives you a straight answer.
