How to Improve Your Soil
Lime that is 90% pure needs 11% more of it. Broadcasting costs 25% more seed than drilling. A 3:1 compost heap is 75% browns.

Improving soil is a slower job than planting in it, and the arithmetic has a common shape: the number you are given is not the number you apply. A recommendation assumes a purity your bag does not have, a seeding rate assumes a method you are not using, and a ratio describes a proportion people consistently misjudge.
Lime: the recommendation assumes pure
A soil test gives you a lime recommendation. Your bag is not pure lime, and the Lime Rate Calculator does the conversion nobody mentions.
300 sq ft, a recommendation of 80 lb per 1,000 sq ft, product at 90% CCE:

CCE — calcium carbonate equivalent — is the purity figure, and it is printed on the bag precisely because it varies. At 90% you need 11% more than the recommendation says. At 70% you would need over 40% more. Applying the recommendation as though your bag were pure under-limes the ground every time, and the correction is quiet enough that people repeat it for years.
⚠️ And you often cannot apply it all at once. With a 50 lb per 1,000 sq ft ceiling per application, this job splits across 2 applications of 13.3 lb. Dumping the full amount in one go risks a surface crust and wasted product; the ceiling exists for a reason.
pH also moves slowly. Lime applied now is a decision about next season, not this one.
Cover crop: broadcasting costs 25% more

25% more seed, because broadcast seed lands on the surface where some of it never makes contact with soil, gets eaten, or dries out. Published seeding rates usually assume drilling — a machine placing seed at depth — which is not what a person with a bucket is doing.
The other honest output here is the leftover: a 50 lb bag leaves you 45 lb spare for a 2,000 sq ft plot. Cover crop seed is sold at field scale, so for a garden the real question is whether you can split a bag with someone, not which bag to buy.
Compost: 3:1 means 75% browns
The Compost Brown-to-Green Ratio Calculator fixes the most common composting mistake, which is a proportion error rather than an ingredient one.
A 27 cubic foot heap at a 3:1 ratio:

Three-to-one sounds like a modest lean toward browns. It is three-quarters of the heap — and almost nobody adds that much dry material, because greens (kitchen waste, grass clippings) arrive continuously and browns have to be deliberately collected and stored.
A heap that smells is almost always short of browns. So is a heap that turns to slime.
The tool also translates the volumes into bucket loads — 8.1 of browns to 2.7 of greens — which is the form the decision actually gets made in, standing at the heap with a bucket.
And the size check: 27 cubic feet is a 3 ft cube, or 1 cubic yard. That is roughly the minimum for a heap that will heat up, which is why smaller heaps compost so much more slowly.

In each case the correction runs the same way: you need more than you thought. More product, more seed, more browns.
Doing them in sequence
These three are a season's worth of soil work rather than a single afternoon:
- Test, then lime — and expect it to take a season or more to move pH. Split the application if the rate is high.
- Cover crop the ground you are not using, especially over winter. Bare soil erodes and leaches.
- Compost continuously, collecting browns in advance — autumn leaves are the free solution to the 75% problem, and they arrive once a year.
⚠️ Get a real soil test before liming. Adding lime without one is the single easiest way to make soil worse rather than better, because over-limed ground locks up nutrients that were perfectly available before, and bringing pH back down is far harder than raising it. The recommendation is the input this whole tool depends on — everything above is arithmetic performed on a number that has to come from a lab.
