THE LAYOVER IS THE EASY PART. THE QUESTION IS WHAT IS LEFT AFTER IT. A ninety-minute layover sounds comfortable and is not, once the airline's own minimum connection time comes out of it. The number worth knowing is the SPARE - what remains after everything you need on the ground - because that is also exactly how late your inbound can be before the connection breaks. ⚠️ THE MINIMUM CONNECTION TIME IS AN INPUT, NOT A NUMBER THIS TOOL INVENTS. Every airport publishes its own, it differs by terminal and by whether the flights are domestic or international, and it can range from about 30 minutes to well over two hours at the same airport. There is no single figure that is honest to assume, so this tool asks for yours. Your airline or the airport's own site is the authority - and if a booking site sold you the connection as a single ticket, it has already applied its own version of that figure. BOTH TIMES ARE LOCAL TO THE SAME AIRPORT, so there is no time-zone arithmetic in the layover at all. You are on the ground in one place. This is worth saying because time zones cause a lot of anxiety about connections and they are genuinely irrelevant here - a 14:30 arrival and a 16:05 departure are 95 minutes apart whatever the boarding passes say about UTC. ⚠️ TICK "DEPARTS THE NEXT DAY" FOR AN OVERNIGHT CONNECTION. Without it a departure earlier in the clock than the arrival gives a NEGATIVE layover, and the tool shows a dash rather than a number, because a connection that leaves before you land is not a short layover - it is a mistake in the entry. EXTRA TIME ON THE GROUND IS ALSO YOURS TO SET, and it is where most missed connections actually live: clearing immigration, collecting and re-checking bags, changing terminal, clearing security again, a gate at the far end of a long pier. The airline's minimum sometimes assumes none of this. If you are arriving internationally and connecting to a domestic flight, this is usually the largest number on the page. - Why doesn't this tell me the minimum connection time?
- Because there is no honest single figure. Minimum connection times are published per airport, and they differ by terminal, by airline, and by whether each leg is domestic or international - the same airport can range from about 30 minutes to well over two hours depending on which combination you are making. A tool that assumed one number would be confidently wrong for most readers, so this one asks for yours instead. Your airline or the airport's own website is the authority. If a booking site sold you the connection on one ticket, it has already applied its own version of that figure, which is why it let you book it.
- What does a negative spare mean?
- That the connection does not work on the figures you entered. It is deliberately shown as a negative number rather than rounded up to zero, because the size of the gap matters - being 5 minutes short is a different conversation with an airline than being 50 minutes short. If your spare is negative on the scheduled times, the connection is not tight, it is broken, and that is worth knowing before you are standing at a gate.
- Do I need to worry about time zones?
- Not for the layover, no. Both times are local to the same airport, because that is where you are standing. A 14:30 arrival and a 16:05 departure are 95 minutes apart regardless of what time zone the airport is in or where either flight came from. Time zones matter for working out how long you will be in the air and for arranging a pick-up at the far end, but they have no effect whatsoever on how long you have between two gates in one building.
- Why is the layover blank?
- Because the outbound departs earlier on the clock than the inbound lands, and the next-day box is not ticked - so the arithmetic gives a negative layover. That is not a very short connection, it is an entry that does not describe a real journey, so the tool shows a dash rather than a number. Tick 'outbound departs the next day' for an overnight connection and it will fill in.
- What should I put in 'extra time on the ground'?
- Anything the airline's minimum does not already cover, and this is where most missed connections actually happen. Clearing immigration on arrival, collecting checked bags and putting them back in, moving between terminals, clearing security a second time, and a gate at the far end of a long pier all cost real time. An international arrival connecting to a domestic departure often needs more here than the airline's published minimum itself. If you are staying airside on one ticket with bags checked through, it may genuinely be zero.
- Is a self-transfer different?
- Very. If your two flights are on separate tickets, the minimum connection time does not protect you at all - it is a scheduling rule the airline applies to its own itineraries. On separate tickets a missed connection is your problem and your cost, the second airline owes you nothing, and you will usually have to collect and re-check your bags, which belongs in the extra time box. Treat the spare figure as a budget you are paying for personally rather than one the airline is standing behind.
- Does the delay allowance predict anything?
- No, and it is not meant to. It is a what-if you control: put in a delay you would not be surprised by on that route, and see whether the connection still stands. The tool has no knowledge of your airline's punctuality, the weather, or whether your inbound is already running late. If you want a real figure to put in, most airlines publish on-time performance for a route, and the number that matters is not the average delay but how often the delay exceeds your spare.
