Common questions

How does the bed number actually work?
Each family moves on by one bed a year and wraps around at the end, which is ordinary modular arithmetic and is exact. With four beds, a family in bed 1 is in bed 2 next year, bed 3 the year after, bed 4 the year after that, and back in bed 1 in the fourth year. That is why the number of beds IS the length of your rotation rather than something you plan separately - four beds gives a four-year rotation and nothing you do with the planting order changes that.
Do I need to track every crop family?
No, and it is simpler not to. If you know where one family is, everything else sits in the same relative order and moves with it - the whole set shifts by one bed together. Pick the family you most need to keep away from itself, which is usually whichever one has given you a disease problem, and use it as your marker. The others take care of themselves as long as you move the entire set in the same direction each year.

Does rotation actually work in a small garden?
It helps, and it is less effective than on a field, which is worth knowing before relying on it. Soil-borne organisms and spores move around a small plot on boots, tools, water splash and wind, so beds a few feet apart are not as isolated as beds a few hundred feet apart. Rotation also does nothing at all about airborne disease and will not clear a problem that is already established. Treat it as one useful practice among several - alongside variety choice, hygiene and drainage - rather than as a guarantee.
Is the plant count realistic?
It is a maximum on a square grid, and treating it as a target is usually a mistake. Two things move it. Offset or triangular spacing fits roughly 15% more plants into the same area and is worth using for anything you grow in quantity. And leaving room to actually reach the middle of a bed is not wasted space - a bed packed to its theoretical maximum is one you cannot weed or harvest without standing in it, which compacts the soil you spent effort improving.
My beds are different sizes. Does that break it?
Not the rotation, only the area figures. The families still move on by one bed a year and still return after the same number of years, because that depends on the count and not the dimensions. What changes is that the area and plant-count outputs describe an average rather than each bed, so run those separately per bed if the difference matters. In practice unequal beds are common and mostly affect what you choose to plant where - the greedy crops in the big bed - rather than the rotation itself.
