Before the mulch arrives
- Measure every bed and fill in the table
- Pull weeds first - mulch smothers seedlings, not established weeds
- Edge the beds so the mulch has something to sit against
- Rake old mulch to break up any crust
- Water the soil if it is dry - mulch slows water getting in
- Clear somewhere for a bulk pile to be tipped
- Have a tarp ready if rain is coming
Keep it off the stems
Piling mulch against trunks and stems holds moisture against bark and invites rot and pests. Leave a few inches clear all the way round. A ring, not a volcano.
