How this is calculated
THE DEPTH IS ADDED TWICE IN EACH DIRECTION, and that is the step people miss. The liner has to run down one side, across the bottom, and back up the other side - so the length needed is the pond's length PLUS twice the maximum depth, and the same again for the width. Then the overlap is added twice more, once at each edge. On a modest pond that turns a 10 ft feature into a 16 ft sheet. USE THE MAXIMUM DEPTH, NOT THE AVERAGE, FOR THE LINER. The sheet has to reach the deepest point; a liner sized on average depth comes up short exactly where it cannot be patched. Average depth is used only for the water volume, which is why they are separate fields here. ⚠️ THE VOLUME IS AN ESTIMATE AND THE LINER SIZE IS NOT. Sizing the sheet is geometry - a rectangle around a box, correct by construction, and generous because it assumes vertical sides. Volume is different: a real pond has sloping sides and an uneven bottom, so length x width x average depth OVERSTATES it, often by a fifth or more. Treat the volume figure as an upper bound. That is the safe direction for the things volume is used for, since a pump or a treatment dosed for slightly more water than is present is a smaller problem than one dosed for less. BUY THE OVERLAP GENEROUSLY. It is the cheapest part of the job and the only part you cannot add later. A liner cut flush with the edge will creep as the ground settles and the water works at it; buried under a course of stone or a turf edge it stays put. Trimming a sheet that is too big takes a minute - the alternative does not exist. ⚠️ WATER IS EXTREMELY HEAVY, AND THIS IS THE FIGURE WORTH READING TWICE. A US gallon weighs about 8.345 lb, so even a small garden pond holds several tons. That matters for anything raised, anything on a deck or a roof, and for whether the ground under the pond is being asked to carry a load it has never carried before. If the pond is not sitting directly on undisturbed ground, the weight figure is a structural question rather than a gardening one. UNDERLAY IS THE SAME SIZE AS THE LINER and is not optional on anything but sand. Roots, stones and settling all find a liner eventually. Old carpet, purpose-made fleece or a thick sand bed all work; nothing at all is a slow leak waiting to happen, and a leak under a filled pond is the hardest kind to find. LINER COMES IN FIXED ROLL WIDTHS, so the sheet you buy is usually bigger than the sheet you need. The waste figure here is the honest cost of that, and it is worth checking whether turning the pond ninety degrees against the roll saves a size.

- Why is the liner so much bigger than the pond?
- Because the depth is counted twice in each direction, and the overlap twice more. The sheet runs down one side, across the bottom and back up the other side - so a 10 ft pond that is 2 ft deep already needs 14 ft of liner before any edge is buried, and 16 ft with a foot of overlap at each side. The same happens across the width. It is the single most common surprise in a first pond build, and it is why a 10 by 6 foot feature needs a sheet close to 16 by 12.
- Maximum depth or average depth?
- Both, for different things, which is why they are separate fields. The LINER is sized on the maximum depth because the sheet physically has to reach the deepest point - size it on the average and it comes up short exactly where you cannot fix it. The VOLUME uses the average depth, because that is what actually determines how much water the hole holds. A pond with sloping sides and a deep centre can easily have an average depth well under half its maximum.
- How accurate is the volume?
- It is deliberately an upper bound rather than a best guess. Length times width times average depth describes a box, and a real pond has sloping sides, shelves for planting and an uneven bottom - so the true volume is lower, often by a fifth or more. That is the useful direction to be wrong in: a pump sized for slightly more water than is present still works, and a treatment dosed by a volume that is a little high is a smaller problem than one dosed by a volume that is too low. If you need a real figure, meter the water going in when you fill it.
- How much overlap should I bury?
- More than feels necessary, because it is the cheapest part of the whole job and the only part that cannot be added afterwards. A liner cut flush with the edge will creep as the ground settles and the water works at it, and the repair involves an empty pond. Buried under a course of stone, a paving edge or a turf lip it stays where you put it. Trimming a sheet that turned out too big takes a minute with a knife; making one bigger is not a thing that exists.
- Do I really need underlay?
- On anything except deep clean sand, yes. Roots grow, stones work upward as the ground freezes and thaws, and the whole base settles under several tons of water - all three find a liner eventually. Old carpet, purpose-made fleece or a thick bed of soft sand all do the job. It is the same area as the liner itself, so order the two together. The reason to bother is not the cost of the liner but the cost of finding a puncture under a filled pond, which is the hardest kind of leak to locate and the most miserable to fix.
- Why does the offcut figure sometimes show a dash?
- Because the roll you entered is narrower than the liner you need, so it cannot be cut from that width at all. Two things to try. Turn the pond against the roll - liner is long on one axis and fixed on the other, so a pond that does not fit one way around often fits the other. Or step up to the next roll width. Joining two pieces is possible with the right tape but it introduces the one seam in an otherwise seamless sheet, which is where a leak will eventually appear, so it is worth avoiding on a garden pond.
- Is the weight really a concern?
- For anything raised, on a deck, on a roof or over a basement, very much so. Water weighs about 8.345 lb a US gallon, so a small garden pond of a few hundred gallons is already well over a ton, and a modest one is several. Sitting directly on undisturbed ground that is usually fine - the ground carried soil of a similar weight before you dug it out. Anywhere else it is a structural question rather than a gardening one, and worth asking someone qualified before filling rather than after.
