How this is calculated

The arithmetic is deliberately simple: pages times minutes per page gives the time for one pass; multiply by the number of passes; divide by the days you have. WHY PASSES RATHER THAN ONE READ-THROUGH: because reading material once is not studying it, and any plan built on a single pass is a plan to have read the book rather than to know it. Two or three passes is the normal shape - one to get through it, one to work with it, one to review. ⚠️ THE HONEST OUTPUT IS HOURS PER DAY, AND ITS JOB IS TO BE UNWELCOME. A plan needing nine hours a day for three weeks is not a plan. Finding that out in week two is a completely different experience from finding it out the night before, and it is the entire reason to do this calculation at the START rather than as reassurance at the end. If the number is impossible, only three things can change: the material covered, the number of passes, or the days. Working out which one gives is a decision, and it is much better made deliberately and early than by running out of time. ⚠️ MINUTES PER PAGE IS NOT READING SPEED. Studying is a different activity: re-reading a paragraph, stopping to think, making notes, working problems, looking things up. Ordinary prose reading runs around 238 words per minute; studying a technical page can take five or ten minutes, and problem sets take far longer than they look. Time yourself on one real page of the actual material rather than estimating - it is the only input here that varies enough to change the answer completely. SPACING BEATS TOTAL HOURS, and this calculator cannot express it. The same number of hours spread across two weeks produces substantially better retention than the same hours crammed into two days - this is one of the most robust findings in the study of learning. The days-remaining input at least makes the shape visible: a large hours-per-day figure over few days is exactly the pattern the evidence says works worst. So treat a comfortable hours-per-day figure as necessary rather than sufficient. Spreading the sessions out is free and is worth more than adding hours. What this cannot know: which material is hard, what you already know, and where the exam actually puts its marks. An hour spent on the topic that carries a third of the paper is not the same hour as one spent on a footnote.

Why multiply by passes?
Because reading material once is not studying it, and a plan built on a single pass is a plan to have read the book rather than to know it. Then it has done its job, and it has done it at the right time. Only three things can change: how much material you cover, how many passes you make, or how many days you have. Deciding which one gives is a real decision, and it is far better made deliberately in week two than discovered by running out of time in week fifteen. Anyone who has ever been surprised by an exam was surprised by this arithmetic - most of them just never did it.
How do I work out minutes per page?
Time yourself on one real page of the actual material, not an estimate and not a page you have already read. It is the only input here that varies enough to change the answer completely - ordinary prose reads at around 238 words a minute, while a technical page you have to actually understand can take five or ten minutes, and a problem set takes far longer than it looks. A large hours-per-day figure over very few days is precisely the pattern the evidence says works worst, so if the calculator says three hours a day for two weeks and you were planning to do it all on the weekend, the arithmetic agrees and the evidence does not.
What is the sessions output for?
Because a number of sessions is more concrete than a number of hours, and easier to schedule honestly. 'Fourteen hours' is a quantity; 'seventeen fifty-minute sessions' is a thing you can put in a calendar and count off. It also makes the daily figure less abstract - more than three or four real study sessions in a day is rarely sustained for long, whatever the hours arithmetic says is possible.
Does it know which material matters?
No, and that is its largest limitation. It treats every page as equal, and they are not - an hour spent on the topic carrying a third of the marks is not the same hour as one spent on a footnote. Past papers and the syllabus weighting are what tell you where the marks actually are, and applying that will change your plan more than anything on this page. Use the calculator for whether the plan fits; use the syllabus for what goes in it.
