A fairly ordinary week — 6.5, 7, 6, 7.5, 6.5, then 9 and 8.5 at the weekend — comes to 51 hours against a 56-hour target. Five hours down, at 91% of target.
The problem with writing it as a balance
Five hours of "debt" looks like it clears with one five-hour lie-in. A ledger, where any hour repays any other hour.
Sleep doesn't work like that. Recovery sleep is different from the sleep you missed, it isn't a straight hour-for-hour exchange, and some of what was lost doesn't come back.
But you don't even need the physiology to see the problem.
The weekend can't carry the week
Look at the same week split in two:

That's not a discipline problem. There are only two weekend nights, and nobody sleeps fourteen hours in one of them. A deficit built across five nights has nowhere to go.
You could sleep an implausible 14 hours both weekend nights and the tool will duly report a surplus — but that's a number, not a plan.
So what's the figure actually for?
Diagnosis, not accounting.
A large weekly shortfall is telling you the weekday schedule doesn't fit the target you set. The fix lives on those five nights — a bedtime, a commute, a shift pattern — not on Saturday morning.
That distinction matters because the natural response to a deficit is to plan a lie-in, which treats the symptom. And if the same deficit shows up week after week, it's structural rather than a run of bad luck.
Small gaps, quietly
45 minutes a night is 5.25 hours a week — most of a full night, lost without any single evening feeling like a decision worth examining.
That's why the average nightly shortfall is usually more revealing than the weekly total. On the example week it's 0.71 hours a night: unremarkable in isolation, and five hours by Sunday.
Your target is an input for a reason
Run that identical week against a 7-hour target instead of 8:

Same sleep. Opposite conclusion.
Adult sleep need genuinely varies, and published figures are population ranges rather than a prescription. Someone who wakes rested and alert on seven hours is not in deficit for missing eight — and setting the target too high manufactures a debt that was never there.
The practical way to find yours: notice how you feel after nights you didn't cut short — on holiday, or across a stretch with no early alarm.
Two things about the numbers you enter
Time asleep, not time in bed. Most people take a while to drop off and wake briefly without remembering, so time in bed overstates sleep.
Trackers estimate. Consumer devices infer sleep from movement and heart rate rather than measuring it, and they disagree with each other about the same night. Fine for a trend; less reliable than the display suggests for a single figure.
⚠️ When this is the wrong tool entirely
When the problem is the quality of sleep rather than the quantity.
If you can't fall asleep or stay asleep, if you sleep a full night and still wake unrefreshed, if you're told you snore heavily or seem to stop breathing, or if daytime sleepiness is affecting your driving or your work — that's a conversation with a clinician, not a sum.
Insomnia and sleep apnoea are common and treatable, and both can leave someone exhausted whose weekly total looks perfectly adequate on this page.
