The tidy answer, and then the honest one

Five cycles × 90 minutes = 7 hours 30 minutes of sleep. Allow 15 minutes to fall asleep and that's 7h45m in bed.

That's the answer every sleep calculator gives you.

Here's the one they leave out: a sleep cycle is documented at 70 to 120 minutes. So "five cycles" is anywhere from 5h50m to 10 hours of sleep.

Where 90 minutes comes from, and what it isn't

90 minutes is a population average for healthy adults (NIH StatPearls; Sleep Foundation). A typical night runs 4 to 5 cycles.

It is a real number. It is not your number, and nobody has measured your number.

When a calculator hands you "set your alarm for 6:37am", it has taken an average across a population and presented it as a measurement of you. The calculator on this page shows you both ends of the range instead, because that width is the actual finding.

The cycles aren't even equal to each other

This is the part that genuinely breaks the multiplication, rather than just widening the error bars.

  • The first cycle is typically the shortest — around 70 to 100 minutes
  • Later cycles run longer — around 90 to 120

So multiplying one constant by five isn't merely noisy. It's wrong in a structured direction, and the discrepancy accumulates across the night instead of averaging out.

Which means cycle-timing predictions get less reliable the further into the night you project them — exactly the opposite of what you'd want from an alarm set eight hours ahead.

So is the whole idea nonsense?

No. The idea underneath is real; the precision is what's oversold.

Sleep runs N1 → N2 → N3 → N2 → REM, and waking out of deep slow-wave sleep genuinely does feel far worse than waking out of light sleep. That groggy, underwater, who-am-I feeling has a name: sleep inertia.

So the instinct behind cycle timing is sound.

What doesn't follow is that you can predict which minute you'll be in light sleep, three weeks in advance, from a constant.

The number that's actually well established

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the Sleep Research Society issued a joint consensus statement — a 15-expert panel reviewing evidence across nine health categories — recommending that:

Adults aged 18 to 60 should sleep 7 or more hours per night on a regular basis.

That's much sturdier ground than any cycle arithmetic, and it's what the calculator measures your plan against with a deliberately signed figure. Four cycles of 90 minutes reads −1, not zero: you're an hour short, and rounding that away would be the whole problem in miniature.

Losing an hour isn't one thing

Here's the most practically useful thing on this page.

Deep sleep and REM are not spread evenly through the night:

  • Slow-wave (deep) sleep — the physically restorative kind — is heaviest in the first two cycles
  • REM — tied to memory consolidation and emotional regulation — is heaviest in the last two

So cutting your night short doesn't remove a fair slice of everything. An hour cut off the end removes most of your REM and leaves your deep sleep essentially intact. An hour cut off the start does close to the opposite.

Going to bed late and waking at your usual time is a different injury from going to bed on time and getting up early — even though both cost you exactly one hour.

That's why a late night can leave you emotionally raw and forgetful rather than physically tired.

Count the time it takes you to fall asleep

Not a rounding detail.

About 15 minutes of sleep latency is normal. A plan that ignores it puts you to bed 15 minutes too late every single night — which compounds into most of a whole cycle across a working week.

If you routinely take much longer than 20 minutes to drop off, that's worth raising with a doctor rather than solving with arithmetic.

What to do with all this

Use the cycle maths to pick a bedtime. Don't use it to pick a wake-up minute.

A consistent schedule is the intervention with real evidence behind it. Pick a wake time you can hold seven days a week, count backwards far enough to clear seven hours plus your latency, and hold it.

And be a little careful with this whole genre. Treating sleep as an optimisation problem tends to make people anxious about sleep, which is itself one of the more reliable ways to sleep badly.

If you actually want your real cycle length

You'd have to measure it, which is a different kind of problem.

Proper measurement means polysomnography with EEG in a sleep lab. Consumer wearables estimate stages from movement and heart rate — they're considerably better at total sleep time than at distinguishing the stages themselves, so a wearable's "deep sleep" graph is a much softer number than its confident presentation suggests.

The things that actually move sleep

  • Same wake time every day, weekends included
  • Total planned sleep of 7 hours or more
  • Wind-down 30–60 minutes before lights out
  • No caffeine after early afternoon
  • Dark, quiet, on the cool side
  • Alcohol is a REM suppressant, not a sleep aid — it shortens the part of the night you were already going to lose
  • If you're awake more than 20 minutes, get up rather than lie there
  • Keep a diary for two weeks before changing anything
