How Far Should You Sit From Your TV?
Two different questions with two different answers — and at 4K they stopped agreeing. At nine feet you can go from a 69-inch screen to a 138-inch one.
There are two questions here, not one
How much of your field of view should the screen fill? That's comfort and immersion, and it's what the published standards address.
How close can you sit before you see pixels? That's resolution and eyesight, and it's a completely separate calculation.
People blur these together and then wonder why the advice contradicts itself.
Your details
The value is width divided by diagonal. Screens are sold by diagonal, but WIDTH is what sets the viewing angle.
The value is 2 x tan(half the angle), so the distance is one division. Published standards disagree - pick how you watch.
What you are WATCHING, not what the panel can show. An upscaled 1080p broadcast is still 1080p of detail.

The standards genuinely disagree

None of these is wrong. A room tuned for a three-hour film in the dark isn't the same as one for the evening news — that's a preference, not an error. Which is why the angle is a choice in the tool rather than a hidden constant.
For a 65-inch 16:9 screen:
- 30° → sit at 8.8 ft
- 36° → sit at 7.3 ft
Use the width, not the diagonal
Screens are sold by diagonal, but the viewing angle depends on how wide the picture is across your vision.
A 65-inch 16:9 screen is 56.7 inches wide (diagonal × 0.872).
And the same diagonal is a different width at a different shape — a 100-inch 16:9 TV and a 100-inch 2.35:1 projector screen are genuinely different objects. The projector screen is 92 inches wide and needs 14.3 ft for the same 30°.
That conversion is the step people skip.
Where 4K actually changed things
Here's the number worth having. A 65-inch screen, watched from 9 feet:

At 1080p, the pixel limit (8.5 ft) and the comfort distance (8.8 ft) land on almost the same number. That's why standard seating distances felt right for years, and why nobody needed to separate the two questions.
At 4K, the pixel limit moves to 4.2 ft — far closer than any comfort standard would put you. Resolution stops being the constraint.
The practical consequence isn't that you move the sofa. It's that at nine feet you could go from a 69-inch screen to a 138-inch one and still never resolve a pixel. Exactly double, because the horizontal pixel count doubled.
Most people spend that headroom on a bigger screen rather than a closer seat — and the tool shows both directions.
Content resolution, not panel resolution

So the pixel-limit figure should be worked out from what you're actually watching, which is why the input asks for content resolution. It matters more than people expect: a lot of live television, older streaming catalogues and most broadcast sport are still well below 4K.
The panel's specification describes its ceiling, not your evening.
Work it backwards instead
The more useful direction is usually: I have this sofa, what should I buy?
At 9 feet with a 30° target, that's a 66-inch screen. At 36°, an 81-inch one.
The sofa position is normally fixed by the room while the screen is the thing you're choosing — so start there, then check the answer against the pixel ceiling. At 4K that ceiling is almost always far above anything you'd actually buy, which means comfort is your real constraint.
What none of this covers
The things that often decide it anyway:
- Where the sofa can physically go. Rooms are not negotiable.
- Off-centre seats. An angle calculated for the middle says nothing about the end of the sofa, where the picture is both narrower and worse.
- Screen height relative to eye level.
- A window opposite, and room brightness generally — a bigger screen in a bright room can be less comfortable, not more.
And the pixel figure assumes roughly 20/20 vision. Sharper eyes push that distance further out; weaker eyes bring it closer.
Treat the number as a starting point, then tape an outline on the wall and sit in the actual seat before ordering anything.
