How this is calculated

THERE ARE TWO SEPARATE QUESTIONS AND THEY GIVE DIFFERENT ANSWERS. The first is how much of your field of view the screen fills, which is a matter of immersion and comfort and is what the published standards address. The second is how close you can sit before you can see individual pixels, which is a matter of resolution and visual acuity. Both are on this page and they should not be confused - the pixel limit tells you what is POSSIBLE, and the viewing angle tells you what is COMFORTABLE. ⚠️ THE PUBLISHED RECOMMENDATIONS GENUINELY DISAGREE, WHICH IS WHY THE ANGLE IS A CHOICE HERE. SMPTE's EG-18-1994 sets a minimum horizontal viewing angle of 30 degrees, which is the long-standing reference for professional viewing and comfortable over long sessions. THX certifies cinemas with a minimum of 36 degrees from the BACK row, so most seats see more than that. Various home-cinema guidance pushes to 40 degrees and beyond for immersion. None of these is wrong; they are different priorities, and a room that is right for a three-hour film is not necessarily right for the evening news. Pick the row that matches how you actually watch. THE ARITHMETIC IS SCREEN WIDTH DIVIDED BY TWICE THE TANGENT OF HALF THE ANGLE, and this tool carries that tangent inside the angle option so the calculation stays a simple division. WIDTH, NOT DIAGONAL, is what matters - screens are sold by diagonal, and the same diagonal is a different width at a different aspect ratio, which is why the shape is an input. ⚠️ 4K CHANGED WHICH CONSTRAINT BINDS. At 1080p, the distance where pixels disappear and the distance the angle standards recommend are almost the same number - which is why standard seating distances felt right for years and why the two questions were rarely separated. At 4K the pixel limit moves much closer than any comfort standard suggests, so resolution stops being the limit at all. You can sit closer, or buy a bigger screen at the same distance, without ever seeing a pixel. THE PIXEL FIGURE ASSUMES 20/20 VISION AND ONE ARCMINUTE OF ACUITY. Better than average eyesight resolves finer detail and moves that distance further out; worse eyesight moves it closer. It is a guideline drawn from typical acuity, not a promise about your eyes. CONTENT RESOLUTION IS NOT SCREEN RESOLUTION. A 4K panel showing an upscaled 1080p broadcast has 1080p worth of detail in it, so the pixel-limit figure applies to what you are actually watching rather than to what the panel can display. Most live television is still nowhere near 4K. NONE OF THIS COVERS THE THINGS THAT OFTEN DECIDE IT ANYWAY - where the sofa can physically go, whether there is a window opposite, the height of the screen relative to your eyes, and whether anyone sits well off to one side. A viewing angle calculated for the middle seat says nothing about the end of the sofa.

Common questions

Why do the recommendations disagree?
Because they are answering slightly different questions and were written for different rooms. SMPTE's EG-18-1994 sets a 30 degree minimum horizontal viewing angle, which is the long-standing professional reference and comfortable over a long session. THX certifies cinemas at a minimum of 36 degrees from the BACK row, which means most seats in the room see considerably more than that. Home-cinema guidance often pushes past 40 degrees for immersion. None of them is wrong - a setup that is right for a three-hour film in a dark room is not necessarily right for watching the news, and that is a preference rather than an error. The angle is a choice here for exactly that reason.
Should I use the diagonal or the width?
Width, always - and that is why the shape of the screen is an input. Televisions are sold by diagonal, but the viewing angle depends on how wide the picture is across your field of view, and the same diagonal gives a different width at a different aspect ratio. A 100 inch 16:9 screen and a 100 inch 2.35:1 projector screen are not the same object: the wider one is genuinely wider and needs a different seating distance for the same angle. The tool converts diagonal to width from the shape you pick, which is the step people skip.
How close can I sit before I see pixels?
It depends on the pixel size and your eyesight, and it is a completely separate question from the viewing angle. Working from a typical one arcminute of visual acuity, a 65 inch 4K screen stops showing individual pixels at about four feet - much closer than any comfort standard would put you. That figure assumes roughly 20/20 vision; sharper eyes push it further out and weaker eyes bring it closer. It tells you what is possible rather than what is pleasant, which is why both numbers appear on the page.
So does 4K let me sit closer?
It removes resolution as the reason not to, which is not quite the same thing. At 1080p the distance where pixels disappear and the distance the viewing-angle standards recommend land on almost the same number - which is why standard seating distances felt right for years, and why nobody needed to separate the two questions. At 4K the pixel limit moves far closer than any comfort standard suggests, so what stops you sitting closer is no longer the panel. In practice most people spend that headroom on a bigger screen at the same distance rather than on moving the sofa, and the tool shows that directly.
Does the resolution of the TV or the show matter?
The show. A 4K panel displaying an upscaled 1080p broadcast contains 1080p worth of real detail, so the pixel-limit figure should be worked out from what you are actually watching. That is why the input asks for the content resolution rather than the panel's. It matters more than people expect, because a lot of live television, older streaming catalogues and most broadcast sport are still well below 4K - so the panel's specification describes its ceiling rather than your evening.
What screen size should I buy for my room?
Work it the other way round, which is what the size-for-your-distance output does: take the seat you already have, pick the angle you want, and it gives the diagonal. That is nearly always the more useful direction, because the sofa position is usually fixed by the room while the screen is the thing you are choosing. Check the answer against the largest-with-no-visible-pixels figure too - at 4K that ceiling is normally far above anything you would buy, which means the comfort standard is your real constraint rather than the resolution.
What does this not account for?
Several things that often decide the answer anyway. Where the sofa can physically go, a window opposite the screen, the height of the screen relative to your eyes, and whether anyone sits well off to one side - a viewing angle calculated for the middle seat says nothing about the end of the sofa, where the picture is both narrower and worse. Room brightness matters too, since a larger screen in a bright room can be less comfortable rather than more. Treat the number as a starting point and then sit in the actual seat before committing.
