How Many Bundles of Shingles Do I Need?

Forget the pitch and a 40 × 30 roof comes out at 40 bundles instead of 45. Measure the ground, not the roof — the slope factor supplies the rest.

Measure the ground. That's the method

You don't need to get on the roof, and on a simple gable you shouldn't.

The footprint — the building's length and width, measured on the ground — plus the pitch gives the roof area exactly:

Slope factor = √(1 + (pitch ÷ 12)²)

For 6/12: √(1 + 0.25) = 1.1180

Roof area = 40 × 30 × 1.1180 = 1,342 sq ft

It's the same number the rafter calculator uses, because it's the same right triangle — once measured along a rafter, once measured across a whole plane.

Then two units nobody uses anywhere else

A roofing square is 100 square feet. That's the unit the entire trade quotes and prices in, and it appears nowhere else in construction. A supplier saying "fifteen squares" means 1,500 sq ft.

Standard asphalt shingles come three bundles to the square — about 33.3 sq ft per bundle.

1,342 × 1.10 waste = 1,476 sq ft = 14.76 squares × 3 = 44.3 → 45 bundles

Three per square isn't universal — check the wrapper

It's the input most worth verifying, because it scales your entire order.

Standard three-tab and most architectural asphalt shingles are three bundles per square. Specialty and heavy designer shingles need four, because each bundle weighs roughly the same and the shingles are thicker — fewer pieces fit in one.

Even within "three", the exact coverage moves. A bundle is about 33.3 sq ft, but the real range across manufacturers is roughly 28–33 sq ft — and some architectural lines publish 32.5, which is 3.08 bundles per square rather than 3.00. On a big roof that's a bundle or two.

Read the wrapper or the manufacturer's sheet for the product you're actually buying. Don't carry a number over from the last job.

What pitch really costs

This is the answer to why two roofs over identically sized houses get priced so differently:

A 12/12 roof has 41.4% more surface than the ground beneath it. That's 41.4% more shingles, underlayment, felt, nails and labour — and it's invisible on a floor plan.

Waste is about complexity, not size

10% is reasonable on a simple gable: two clean planes, cuts only at the rakes.

15% or more once there are valleys, hips or dormers, because every one of those is an angled cut with a discarded offcut. On our example, 15% takes it from 45 bundles to 47.

A large simple roof wastes proportionally less than a small complicated one. Count the valleys, not the square footage.

The order lines that aren't shingles

None of these are in the bundle count, and each is a separate line:

  • Starter strip along every eave
  • Ridge cap along every ridge and hip
  • Underlayment
  • Ice-and-water shield, where climate or code requires it
  • Drip edge along eaves and rakes
  • Nails — the right length for the layer count
  • Flashing at every penetration, chimney and wall

Ridge cap is the one people forget. It's sold by the linear foot rather than by the square, so it never appears anywhere in the bundle arithmetic — and it's routinely discovered missing on the last day of the job. Some roofers cut cap from three-tab bundles instead, which changes the bundle count. Decide that before ordering, not after.

Roofs that aren't one rectangle

Break it into rectangles, calculate each at its own pitch, and add the results. That covers L-shapes, additions and mixed-pitch sections — which is most real roofs.

A hip roof's total surface still works out correctly from the footprint and slope factor. What changes is the waste: every hip is a cut edge, so push the allowance up.

And the questions this doesn't answer

The bundle count is the easy part. What actually decides the job:

  • Whether your code lets you lay over an existing roof, and how many layers
  • What the deck underneath is like once the old roof is off
  • Whether a tear-off is needed, and where the skip goes
