How this is calculated

Roof area is the FOOTPRINT area multiplied by the slope factor. The slope factor is the square root of one plus the pitch over twelve, squared - the same number the rafter calculator uses, because it is the same triangle. A 6/12 roof is about 11.8 percent larger than the ground it covers, and a 12/12 roof is over 40 percent larger. This is why you can measure a simple gable roof from the ground. The footprint is the same length and width as the building, and the pitch supplies the rest. It is safer than climbing, and on a straightforward roof it is at least as accurate. A ROOFING SQUARE is 100 square feet. It is the unit the whole trade quotes in, and it is not a unit used anywhere else - so it is worth knowing before you ring a supplier. Standard three-tab and architectural asphalt shingles come THREE BUNDLES TO THE SQUARE, about 33.3 square feet each. Specialty and heavy designer shingles need four, because each bundle weighs about the same and the thicker shingles leave fewer pieces in it. That is why bundles per square is an input rather than a fixed number - check the wrapper or the manufacturer's sheet for the product you are actually buying, because getting it wrong scales your entire order. Even within three, the exact coverage moves. A bundle is ABOUT 33.3 square feet, but the real range across manufacturers runs roughly 28 to 33, and some architectural lines publish 32.5 - which is 3.08 bundles per square rather than 3.00. On a large roof that is a bundle or two. Waste covers cuts at hips, valleys and rakes. Ten percent is a common allowance on a simple gable. A roof with several valleys, dormers or hips wastes considerably more - fifteen percent is more realistic there, because every valley means cutting shingles on an angle and discarding the offcut. ⚠️ NOT INCLUDED, and every one of them is a separate order line: starter strip along the eaves, ridge cap along the ridges and hips, underlayment, ice-and-water shield, drip edge, and nails. Ridge cap in particular is sold by the linear foot and is easy to forget entirely until the last day of the job. This assumes ONE simple rectangular gable roof at a single pitch. Break an L-shaped or multi-pitch roof into rectangles, calculate each at its own pitch, and add the results. The calculation also says nothing about whether you can lay over an existing roof, how many layers your code permits, or what the deck underneath is like. Those decide the job far more than the shingle count does.

What is a roofing square?
100 square feet of roof. It is the unit the entire roofing trade quotes and prices in, and it is not used anywhere else in construction - so a supplier saying 'fifteen squares' means 1,500 square feet. Bundles are the other unit you will hear, and standard asphalt shingles come three bundles to the square, about 33.3 square feet each - though the real coverage per bundle ranges from about 28 to 33 depending on the product. Knowing both before you ring is the difference between a quick call and a confusing one.
Why do I measure the ground instead of the roof?
Because the footprint plus the pitch gives you the roof area exactly, and it does not involve getting on a roof. Multiply the footprint area by the slope factor - the square root of one plus the pitch over twelve squared - and you have the real surface. On a 6/12 roof that is about 11.8 percent more area than the ground below it. On a simple gable this is safer than climbing and at least as accurate.
How much does pitch change the order?
More than most people expect, and it is invisible on a plan. A 4/12 roof is about 5 percent larger than its footprint; a 6/12 is about 12 percent; a 12/12 is 41.4 percent. That last figure is 41.4 percent more shingles, underlayment, felt and labour than the ground area suggests. If you have ever wondered why a steep roof costs so much more to cover, this is most of the answer.
Is three bundles per square always right?
No, and it is the input most worth checking. Standard three-tab and most architectural asphalt shingles are three bundles to the square. Specialty and heavy designer shingles need four, because each bundle weighs about the same and the thicker shingles leave fewer pieces in it. Ridge cap is sold by the linear foot and is the one most often forgotten, usually discovered on the last day. Some roofers cut cap from three-tab bundles instead, which changes the bundle count - worth deciding before ordering rather than after.
My roof is not a simple rectangle.
Break it into rectangles, calculate each at its own pitch, and add the results. That handles L-shapes, additions and sections at different pitches, which is most real roofs. What it does not handle is a hip roof's geometry in detail - the total surface area still works out from the footprint and slope factor, but the waste allowance should go up because every hip is a cut edge.
