How this is calculated
Studs are set a fixed distance apart measured centre to centre, which is what "16 inches on centre" means. The wall length is converted to inches and divided by that spacing to give the number of BAYS - the gaps between studs. Studs are then bays plus one, because a run of gaps needs a stud at each end as well as between each pair. Three bays need four studs. This is the number people get wrong. Plate timber is the length multiplied by three: one bottom plate, and a doubled top plate, which is standard on a load-bearing wall. A non-load-bearing partition with a single top plate needs two lengths rather than three. The count does NOT include the extra framing around openings. A door or window needs king studs, jack studs, a header and cripples above and below, and how many depends on the opening's width and what the wall carries. Those are counted separately. Corners and wall intersections also take extra studs - typically two or three at each - and are not included here.
Common questions
- Why studs plus one?
- Because a wall needs a stud at both ends, not just between the bays. One bay needs two studs, two bays need three, and so on. Ordering exactly one stud per bay leaves you one short at the end of every wall you frame.
- 16 or 24 inches?
- Sixteen is the standard and what most drywall, insulation and sheet goods are sized around. Twenty-four is used on some non-load-bearing walls to save timber, but the wall is springier and sheet materials are more prone to sagging between studs. What a load-bearing wall requires is not a preference — check what applies locally.
- Does this include doors and windows?
- No, and openings add a surprising amount. Each one needs king studs, jack studs, a header and cripples above and below, and the count depends on the opening width and what the wall carries. Work those out per opening and add them.
- What about corners?
- Also extra — typically two or three studs at each corner or wall intersection depending on the method used. Add them per corner.
- Why is plate timber three times the length?
- One bottom plate and a doubled top plate, which is standard where a wall carries load. A non-load-bearing partition with a single top plate needs two lengths, so use twice the wall length instead.
