THE FIGURE COMES STRAIGHT FROM THE MANUFACTURER, and that matters here more than usual. USG's submittal sheets state coverage as approximately 10 gal per 1,000 sq ft of gypsum panels for Sheetrock Brand All-Purpose (J1969) and Total (J1508), and 9.4 gal per 1,000 sq ft for Plus 3 Lightweight (J498A) and All-Purpose Midweight (J963). Four products, a spread of about 6%. ⚠️ WHY THAT MATTERS: THE PUBLISHED FIGURES FOR THIS ONE CONTRADICT THEMSELVES BADLY. Search for joint compound coverage and you will find 1 gallon per 100 sq ft alongside 30 gallons per 1,000 sq ft - a threefold disagreement, from the same search. The manufacturer figure settles it: 10 gal per 1,000 sq ft IS 1 gallon per 100 sq ft, so the first is right and the second is wrong by a factor of three. This tool was deliberately not built until that source was found. ⚠️ DO NOT MULTIPLY BY THE NUMBER OF COATS. This is the trap, and it is the opposite of how paint works. The manufacturer's figure is for FINISHING the panels - the whole standard three-coat system: bed the tape, a second coat feathered about 2 in past the first, a third feathered 2 in past that, plus fasteners and corners. Multiplying it by three is the commonest way to end up with two spare pails. IT IS AN AREA FIGURE, NOT A JOINT FIGURE. Coverage is quoted per square foot of PANEL, which is convenient but slightly counterintuitive - compound only goes on the joints, the fasteners and the corners, yet the figure is expressed against the whole sheet. It works because joint length per unit area is roughly constant for standard 4x8 sheets. If you are hanging unusually small pieces, expect more. THE ARITHMETIC: area / 1,000 x coverage, plus waste. Which works out at about a third of a gallon for each 4x8 sheet. LEVEL 5 IS A DIFFERENT JOB AND IS NOT IN THIS FIGURE. A Level 4 finish - the ordinary one - is what the coverage assumes. A Level 5 adds a thin skim coat over the ENTIRE surface, not just the joints, and needs substantially more compound. USG's submittal sheets point at their own Finishing & Decorating Gypsum Panels document (J2010) for skim-coating guidance rather than giving a number on the product sheet, so no figure for it is offered here either. BUY BY THE PAIL AND EXPECT WASTE. USG packs All-Purpose in 4.5 gal pails and 3.5 and 4.5 gal cartons. Compound that has been out in the open, thinned, or left with a skin on it does not go back, and what is on your knife and in the pan at the end of the day is gone. 10% is a fair allowance and more if you are new to it. SETTING-TYPE COMPOUND IS SOLD DRY AND IS A SEPARATE CALCULATION. The hot muds - 20, 45, 90 minute - come as powder in pounds rather than ready-mix in gallons, and they set chemically rather than by drying. They are the right choice for a first coat in a hurry or for filling a deep gap, and they are far harder to sand, which is why most people bed with a setting compound and finish with ready-mix. CHECK THE PRODUCTION DATE. Ready-mix has a shelf life of about nine months from manufacture, and a pail that has been on a shelf for a year may be usable or may not. Do not use it if it has discoloured or smells wrong.

A single search turns up 1 gallon per 100 square feet alongside 30 gallons per 1,000 square feet - a threefold disagreement between numbers presented with equal confidence. The manufacturer's figure settles it, and neatly: 10 gallons per 1,000 sq ft IS 1 gallon per 100 sq ft, so the first figure is right and the second is wrong by a factor of three. This calculator was deliberately not published until that source was found.
Do I multiply by the number of coats?
No - and this is the trap, because it is the opposite of how paint works. The manufacturer's coverage figure is for FINISHING the panels, meaning the whole standard three-coat system: bedding the tape, a second coat feathered about 2 inches past the first, a third feathered 2 inches past that, plus all the fastener heads and corners. Multiplying it by three is the commonest way to end up with two unopened pails and a shelf-life problem.
Why is coverage given per square foot of panel?
Convenience, and it works better than it sounds. Compound only actually goes onto the joints, the fastener heads and the corners - not the middle of a board - so quoting it against the whole panel area is slightly counterintuitive. It holds up because the length of joint per square foot is roughly constant when you are hanging standard 4x8 sheets in a normal pattern. If you are patching in lots of small offcuts, you have far more joint per square foot and should expect to use more.
What about a Level 5 finish?
Not included, and deliberately not estimated. The coverage figure assumes a Level 4 finish, which is the ordinary one. A Level 5 adds a thin skim coat across the ENTIRE surface rather than just the joints, and needs substantially more compound. USG's own submittal sheets do not give a number for it - they point at their separate Finishing & Decorating Gypsum Panels document (J2010) - so no figure is invented for it here either. If you are going to Level 5, price it separately.
What about setting-type compound?
Different product, different calculation. The hot muds - 20, 45 and 90 minute - are sold dry, by the pound, and set chemically rather than by drying out, so a gallons-per-1,000-sq-ft figure does not apply. They are the right choice when you need to recoat the same day or fill a deep gap without shrinkage, and they are considerably harder to sand. A common approach is to bed and fill with a setting compound and do the finish coats in ready-mix, which sands easily.
How much waste should I allow?
10% is fair, and more if you are new to it. Compound that has been thinned, left out in the open, or allowed to form a skin does not go back in the pail usefully, and whatever is on your knife and in the pan at the end of the day is gone. Also check the production date code before you buy: ready-mix has a shelf life of about nine months from manufacture, and a pail that has sat on a shelf for a year may be fine or may not. Do not use it if it has discoloured or smells unpleasant.
