How Much Joint Compound Do I Need?

10 gallons per 1,000 sq ft — about a third of a gallon per sheet — and that covers all three coats. Don't multiply it by three.

The number

About 10 gallons per 1,000 sq ft of drywall. Roughly a third of a gallon per 4×8 sheet.

And that covers the entire three-coat finish — not one coat.

For a typical 1,000 sq ft of panel with 10% waste: 11 gallons, which is three 4.5-gallon pails.

Why this page cites document numbers

Because the published figures for joint compound contradict each other badly, and this is one of the few materials where that's true.

A single search turns up:

  • 1 gallon per 100 sq ft
  • 30 gallons per 1,000 sq ft

Presented with equal confidence. That's a threefold disagreement, and there's no way to tell from context which is right.

So here's the manufacturer's own answer, from USG's submittal sheets:

Four products, two weights, agreeing within about 6%.

And it settles the argument neatly: 10 gallons per 1,000 sq ft is 1 gallon per 100 sq ft. The first figure was right. The second is wrong by a factor of three.

Don't multiply by the number of coats

This is the trap, and it catches people because it's the opposite of how paint works.

The manufacturer's figure is for finishing the panels — the whole standard three-coat system:

  1. Bed the tape
  2. Second coat, feathered about 2" past the first
  3. Third coat, feathered about 2" past the second
  4. Plus every fastener head and all the corners

It's already in there. Multiplying by three is the commonest way to end up with two unopened pails and a shelf-life problem — the calculator shows that mistake as its own output so you can see the size of it.

It's an area figure, not a joint figure

Slightly counterintuitive, and worth understanding so you know when it breaks.

Compound only goes onto the joints, fastener heads and corners — never the middle of a board. Yet coverage is quoted against the whole panel area.

It works because the length of joint per square foot is roughly constant when you're hanging standard 4×8 sheets in a normal pattern.

Where it breaks: if you're patching in lots of small offcuts, you have far more joint per square foot than the figure assumes, and you'll use more. Same principle as the grout calculator, where small tiles mean vastly more joint — it's just hidden here rather than exposed as an input.

Level 5 is not this number

The coverage figure assumes a Level 4 finish — the ordinary one.

A Level 5 adds a thin skim coat across the entire surface, not just the joints, and needs substantially more compound.

USG's own submittal sheets don't give a number for it — they point at a separate document (J2010, Finishing & Decorating Gypsum Panels). So no figure is invented for it here either.

If you're going to Level 5 — worth doing under gloss paint or in raking light — price it separately.

Setting-type compound is a different sum entirely

The hot muds — 20, 45 and 90 minute — are sold dry, by the pound, and set chemically rather than by drying out. A gallons-per-1,000-sq-ft figure doesn't apply to them at all.

They're the right choice when you need to recoat the same day, or fill a deep gap without shrinkage. They're also considerably harder to sand.

Which is why a common approach is: bed and fill with setting compound, finish with ready-mix. You get the speed and the low shrinkage where it matters, and the easy sanding where it matters.

Waste, and the date on the pail

10% is fair, and more if you're new to it.

Compound that's been thinned, left open, or allowed to form a skin doesn't go back in the pail usefully. Whatever is on your knife and in the pan at the end of the day is gone.

Check the production date code before you buy. Ready-mix has a shelf life of about nine months from manufacture, and a pail that's sat on a shelf for a year may be fine — or may not. Don't use it if it's discoloured or smells unpleasant.

Keep the spare sealed. You'll want it.

The sequence that actually works

  • Screws set just below the surface, none tearing the paper
  • Gaps over ¼" prefilled with setting compound first
  • Coat 1 — bed the tape, squeezed down, no trapped air
  • Corner bead fixed before any finishing coat
  • Fully dry between coats — not just touch dry
  • Coat 2 feathered ~2" past the first; coat 3 ~2" past the second
  • Fasteners and corners get three coats too
  • Sand lightly between coats — a wet sponge beats a sander indoors
  • Prime before paint. Bare compound and paper absorb very differently, and that difference shows through a finish coat as patchiness
