How Many Sheets of Drywall Do I Need?
Total area divided by sheet area, plus waste. Here's the arithmetic, why you don't subtract doors and windows, and how to pick a sheet size.

That's the whole calculation. The two things people get wrong are what counts as area, and how much to add for cuts.

The arithmetic
A room 14 by 12 feet with 8 foot ceilings, boarding the walls and the ceiling, using 4 × 8 sheets.
Walls — perimeter times height:
2 × (14 + 12) = 52 feet of perimeter 52 × 8 = 416 square feet
Ceiling — length times width:
14 × 12 = 168 square feet
Total: 416 + 168 = 584 square feet
One sheet. A 4 × 8 sheet is 4 × 8 = 32 square feet.
584 ÷ 32 = 18.25 sheets
Add waste at 10%: 18.25 × 1.1 = 20.1, so 21 sheets.
Don't subtract the doors and windows
This is the one that catches people out, and it's counterintuitive enough to be worth the paragraph.
You don't board around an opening. You board straight over it and cut the opening out afterwards. It's faster, the joints land in better places, and the edges come out straighter.
Which means the sheet gets used up whether there's a window behind it or not. The piece you cut out is usually an awkward size that won't fit anywhere else, so it goes in the skip.
Subtracting openings is the classic way to end up two sheets short on a Sunday afternoon.
Picking a sheet size
Sheets come in 8, 10 and 12 foot lengths, all normally 4 feet wide.
The temptation is to buy 8-footers because they're easier to handle. The argument against is joints. Every joint has to be taped, filled, sanded and blended, and that's the part of drywalling that takes actual skill. Fewer, longer sheets means fewer joints and a better-looking wall.
- 12 foot — fewest joints, best finish. Needs two people and a clear route into the room.
- 10 foot — a reasonable middle ground.
- 8 foot — manageable alone, and sometimes the only thing that will get round a stair turn.
Measure your access before you order. A 12-foot sheet that won't make the turn at the top of the stairs is an expensive lesson.
Waste: 10% is a starting point, not a rule
Ten percent covers a plain rectangular room with a couple of openings.
Push it higher when the room fights you: several windows, angled or sloped ceilings, a stairwell, alcoves, or anything you have to cut around. Those all generate offcuts too small to reuse, and each one is a fraction of a sheet gone.
Buy the right board for the room
The calculator counts sheets, not types, and the type matters:
- Standard — bedrooms, living rooms, hallways
- Moisture-resistant — bathrooms, utility rooms, and behind kitchen splashbacks
- Fire-rated — garages, ceilings under living space, anywhere it's required
Count those separately. Running the total and then discovering a third of it needed to be moisture-resistant means another trip.
What this doesn't count
Screws, tape and joint compound. Those scale with the number of joints, not the area, and the joint count depends on how you lay the sheets out. Work them out once you know your layout — the tile calculator's logic doesn't transfer here.
The ceiling being harder than the walls. Same area, twice the effort, and genuinely a two-person job. If you're planning a solo weekend, plan the ceiling for the day someone can help.
Store it flat
Not part of the count, but it ruins more board than bad measuring does.
Drywall left standing on edge bows within a day or two, and a bowed sheet won't sit flat against a stud — you'll see the wave in the finished wall under raking light. Stack it flat, on bearers, off a damp floor, and out of the rain. Board that's been wet never fully recovers.
Where people get it wrong
- Subtracting openings. See above. It's the most common one.
- Forgetting the ceiling. On a 14 × 12 room that's 168 square feet — over five sheets.
- Measuring one wall and multiplying by four. Rooms are rarely square. Use the perimeter.
- Buying zero waste. There is no layout with no offcuts.
- Not checking access. Sheet size is limited by the tightest corner between the van and the room.
- Ordering all standard board. Then finding the bathroom needed moisture-resistant.
The short version
Perimeter × height, plus length × width if you're doing the ceiling, divided by the area of one sheet, plus about 10%, rounded up. Don't deduct doors and windows. Buy the longest sheet you can actually get into the room, count moisture-resistant and fire-rated separately, and stack it flat.
