How Much Does a Load of Lumber Weigh?

A 2×4 is 1.5 by 3.5 inches. Calculate from the name instead of the board and you overstate the weight by 52%.

The name is not the size

A "2×4" measures 1.5 by 3.5 inches. A 2×6 is 1.5 by 5.5. A 2×8 is 1.5 by 7.25.

Nominal sizes describe what the board was before it was dried and planed. They survive only as trading names.

Softwood kiln-dried is roughly 25-32. Common hardwoods 40-50. Look up your species if it matters.

Green softwood runs 40-50. Pressure-treated is wet from the process and behaves the same way for weeks.

Board feet won't give you weight

Board feet are a pricing unit, calculated from nominal dimensions because that's the trading convention. They're exactly the right number for getting a quote.

Weight depends on the real volume of wood, which is smaller.

Both are correct descriptions of the same board answering different questions. Mixing them is the commonest way a load estimate goes wrong — and it always errs heavy, so people either carry less than they could or trust a figure that was never the weight.

⚠️ Moisture beats species

This surprises people. Freshly sawn green lumber can carry more than half its weight in water, losing it over months.

The same board might be 30 lb/ft³ kiln-dried and 45 or more green.

A load comfortably inside your payload dry can be well over it green.

Pressure-treated lumber is the trap. It's wet from the treatment process and behaves like green wood for weeks after purchase — while looking and pricing like finished stock.

Working figures: softwood 25–32 lb/ft³ kiln-dried, 40–50 green. Common hardwoods around 40–50 dried. Look up your species if the load is near a limit.

⚠️ Payload includes you

Payload is what the vehicle can carry, and it's on the door jamb sticker — not in the marketing.

Crucially it covers everything aboard: you, your passengers, fuel, tools, a bed liner, a rack. The number available for lumber is the sticker figure minus all of that.

A half-ton truck does not carry half a ton of cargo on top of itself.

And lumber is dense enough that a stack looking modest in the bed reaches the limit long before the bed looks full. Fifty 2×4s is already 34% of a 1,500 lb payload dry — 44% green. Two hundred of them is 175% green, and the bed still isn't full.

So how many can you actually take?

This is the question behind the question, and the tool answers it directly — using the green figure, because that's the one that gets you home.

At 13.1 lb a board green, a 1,500 lb payload allows 114 boards.

But that sticker figure has to cover everything aboard. Subtract yourself at roughly 200 lb and another 100 for tools, fuel margin and whatever lives in the bed, and you have 1,200 lb available:

That gap of 23 boards is entirely made of you and your toolbox — and it's the reason a load calculated straight off the sticker can be over before a single board is loaded.

If your project needs more than the realistic figure, the honest answer is two trips or a delivery. Both are cheaper than a suspension repair, and considerably cheaper than the alternative.

Weight isn't the only issue

Securing the load is a legal requirement and a physics one. An unsecured load that shifts under braking is dangerous regardless of whether it's within weight.

Overhang usually needs flagging or marking under local rules. Check what those require before loading rather than in the car park afterwards.

Distribution matters too — a heavy load sitting far behind the axle handles very differently from the same weight over it.

And what this doesn't count

Wood only. Fasteners, hardware, packaging, banding, and any water sitting on an uncovered pile after a downpour are all on top.

None is decisive alone, but they all push the same direction — which is another argument for planning against the green weight whenever a load is anywhere near a limit.
