How Many Rolls of Wallpaper Do I Need?
8 rolls for a typical room — but only 6 if the paper had no pattern repeat. The repeat decides how many drops you get from each roll.
Wallpaper isn't an area calculation
That's why people come up short.
You don't buy square feet, you buy drops — full-height strips cut off a roll. A roll with 8 inches left on the end has 8 inches of scrap, not 8 inches of wallpaper.
For a room with a 40 ft perimeter and 8 ft walls, using a paper with a 21 inch repeat on standard 33 ft × 20.5 in rolls:
8 rolls.
Without the repeat, the same room would take 6.

20.5 in is the usual American double roll; European is 20.9; 27 in also exists.

The four steps
- Work out the cut length of one drop
- Divide roll length by cut length → whole drops per roll (round down)
- Divide perimeter by roll width → drops needed (round up)
- Divide one by the other → rolls (round up)
The rounding happens twice, and both times it goes against you. That's the whole reason an area estimate under-buys.
The cut length is not the wall height
This is the part that does all the damage.
With a patterned paper, every drop has to start at the same point in the pattern as the one beside it. So you cut to the next whole multiple of the repeat above your wall height.
An 8 ft wall with a 21 inch (1.75 ft) repeat:
- Four repeats = 7.00 ft — too short
- Five repeats = 8.75 ft ✓
So you cut 8.75 ft for an 8 ft wall, and 9 inches goes in the bin on every single drop.
And that's what costs you rolls
At 8.75 ft per drop, a 33 ft roll gives you 3 whole drops (33 ÷ 8.75 = 3.77, round down).
Without the repeat, at 8.00 ft per drop, the same roll gives you 4.
You need 24 drops either way. So:
- 24 ÷ 3 = 8 rolls
- 24 ÷ 4 = 6 rolls
The pattern costs two rolls — a third more paper. The calculator shows both figures side by side so you can see that before you fall in love with a large repeat.
It isn't a smooth relationship
Worth knowing, because it means you should check your case rather than assume.
What matters is whether the cut length crosses a threshold that changes the whole number of drops per roll. A slightly bigger repeat can cost you nothing at all, and then one more inch costs you a whole drop per roll.
Change the wall height in that example from 8 ft to 9 ft and the penalty vanishes entirely — both the patterned and the plain paper give 3 drops per roll, so both need 8 rolls. Same paper, same repeat, no cost.
A free-match or random-match paper has no repeat penalty ever. Worth knowing while you're choosing.
Don't deduct doors and windows
Another one that surprises people who've just done a paint calculation.
The drops are cut to full height regardless of what's behind them, and the offcut from above a door usually can't be used anywhere else because the pattern won't line up where you need it.
Measure the perimeter as though the walls were solid.
Only a genuinely large opening — patio doors, a wide picture window — is worth deducting, and then by removing whole drops, not square footage.
Offset matches waste more than this
Check your label for the match type:
- Straight match — every drop starts at the same point. That's what this calculation assumes
- Offset / drop match — alternate drops start half a repeat along. More trimming, less reusable offcut. Treat the answer as a floor and add a roll
- Free / random match — no repeat penalty at all
Roll sizes vary more than they should
Which is why both dimensions are inputs rather than constants:
- Common American double roll: about 20.5 in × 33 ft (~56 sq ft)
- European: 20.9 in × 33 ft
- Some papers come 27 in wide
There's also a genuinely confusing convention where "single rolls" are priced individually but only sold in double-roll bolts. Read the label and enter what it actually says, not what you expect it to say.
Why the waste figure looks alarming
The calculator reports 27% overall waste on that default job.
That's normal, not a mistake. You lose paper at three separate points:
- The pattern trim on every drop
- The part-drop left on the end of each roll
- The final roll being only partly used
It's reported so the number isn't a shock when you're standing surrounded by offcuts — and so you keep them. You'll want them for a repair, and by then the batch will have changed.
Buy one batch, and check every roll
Wallpaper is printed in batches, and the colour genuinely differs between them.
A wall papered from two batches shows a vertical seam in the right light that no amount of care will hide.
Buy them all at once. Check the batch number on every roll before you start, not after you've hung three of them.
