How this is calculated

WALLPAPER IS NOT AN AREA CALCULATION, and treating it as one is why people come up short. You cut full-height strips, called drops, and what matters is how many whole drops you can get from a roll. A roll with 8 inches left on the end has 8 inches of scrap, not 8 inches of wallpaper. THE FOUR STEPS: work out the cut length for one drop; divide the roll length by that to get whole drops per roll; divide the wall perimeter by the roll width to get how many drops you need; divide one by the other and round up. ⚠️ THE CUT LENGTH IS NOT THE WALL HEIGHT - THIS IS THE WHOLE GAME. With a patterned paper, each drop has to start at the same point in the pattern as the one beside it, so you cut to the next whole multiple of the repeat ABOVE your wall height. An 8 foot wall with a 21 inch repeat needs a cut length of 8.75 feet, because five repeats is 8.75 and four is only 7. Those extra 9 inches are cut off and thrown away on every single drop. AND THAT IS WHAT COSTS YOU ROLLS. On this default job the repeat takes the drops-per-roll from 4 down to 3, which takes the order from 6 rolls to 8 - a third more paper, for a pattern. The calculator shows both numbers side by side so you can see exactly what the pattern is costing before you commit to it. A free-match or random-match paper has no repeat penalty at all, which is worth knowing when you are choosing. ROLL SIZES VARY AND YOU MUST READ THE LABEL. The common American double roll is about 20.5 inches wide by 33 feet long, giving roughly 56 square feet, but 27 inch wide rolls exist and European rolls are 20.9 inches by 33 feet. Both are inputs here for that reason. 'Single rolls' are frequently priced individually but sold only in double-roll bolts, which is a genuinely confusing convention. ⚠️ DO NOT DEDUCT DOORS AND WINDOWS in the normal way. The drops are cut to full height regardless, and the offcut above a door usually cannot be used elsewhere because the pattern will not line up where you need it. Measure the perimeter as if the walls were solid. Only a very large opening - patio doors, a wide picture window - is worth taking out, and then by removing whole drops rather than square footage. OFFSET AND DROP-MATCH PATTERNS WASTE MORE than the straight-match figure here. With an offset match, alternate drops start half a repeat along, so the calculation above is a floor rather than a ceiling. Add a roll. BUY ALL THE ROLLS AT ONCE AND CHECK THE BATCH NUMBER. Wallpaper is printed in batches and the colour genuinely differs between them - a wall papered from two batches shows a vertical seam in the right light that no amount of care will hide.

Common questions

How many rolls of wallpaper do I need?
For a room with a 40 ft perimeter and 8 ft walls, using a paper with a 21 inch repeat on standard 33 ft by 20.5 in rolls: 8 rolls. You need 24 drops to go round the room, and the repeat means you only get 3 whole drops out of each roll. Without the repeat you would get 4 drops per roll and need only 6 - so the pattern is costing you 2 rolls.
Why isn't this just an area calculation?
Because you buy whole drops, not square feet. Wallpaper is hung as full-height strips cut off the roll, and a roll with 8 inches left on the end has 8 inches of scrap rather than 8 inches of usable paper. That rounding happens twice - once when you divide the roll into whole drops, and again when you divide the drops needed by the drops per roll - and it is why an area-based estimate leaves people short.
What does the pattern repeat actually do?
It sets the length you have to cut each drop to. With a patterned paper every drop must start at the same point in the pattern as the one beside it, so you cut to the next whole multiple of the repeat ABOVE the wall height. An 8 ft wall with a 21 inch repeat means cutting 8.75 ft, because five repeats is 8.75 ft and four is only 7 - so 9 inches goes in the bin on every single drop. That is what pushes you from 4 drops per roll to 3.
How much does a big repeat cost me?
On the default job here, exactly 2 extra rolls - 8 instead of 6, a third more paper. It is not a smooth relationship either: what matters is whether the cut length crosses a threshold that changes the whole number of drops per roll. A slightly larger repeat can cost you nothing at all, and then one more inch costs you a whole drop per roll. The calculator shows the no-repeat figure alongside yours so you can check your specific case before choosing the paper.
Should I deduct doors and windows?
Generally no, and this surprises people who have just done a paint calculation. The drops are cut to full height regardless of what is behind them, and the offcut from above a door usually cannot be used anywhere else because the pattern will not line up where you need it to. Measure the perimeter as though the walls were solid. Only a genuinely large opening - patio doors, a wide picture window - is worth deducting, and then by removing whole drops rather than square footage.
What about offset or drop-match patterns?
They waste more than this calculation shows, so treat the answer as a floor and add a roll. With a straight match every drop starts at the same point in the pattern. With an offset or drop match, alternate drops start half a repeat further along, which means more trimming and less reusable offcut. The label will tell you which you have - look for 'straight match', 'offset match' or 'random/free match'. Free match has no repeat penalty at all.

The calculator reports it so the number is not a surprise when you are stood surrounded by offcuts, and so you keep the leftovers rather than binning them - you will want them for a repair, and the batch will have changed by then.
