How this is calculated

The run starts as the perimeter of the room: 2 x (length + width). The width of each doorway is then subtracted - the number of doorways times how wide they are - because baseboard stops at each side of an opening rather than crossing it. A waste allowance is added on top. Trim waste is not like tile waste — it comes almost entirely from CUTS, especially mitres at corners, and from the offcuts too short to use anywhere. Ten percent suits a plain rectangular room; a room with several corners, alcoves or a bay window wants more. The piece count is that waste-adjusted figure divided by the length of stick you are buying, rounded up - not the bare run. Trim is sold in fixed lengths, and the important part is not the total footage but whether a wall can be run in ONE piece — a join in the middle of a long wall is visible forever. This assumes a rectangular room. For an L-shape, measure the actual perimeter and enter it as a room whose 2 x (length + width) matches, or split it and add the runs.

Common questions

Why does it show me the longest wall?
Because the number that matters is not the total footage, it is whether a wall can be run in ONE piece. A join in the middle of a long wall never disappears, however well it is scarfed and filled. If your longest wall is 14 feet, buying 16 foot lengths is worth the extra handling.
How much waste should I allow?
Ten percent for a plain rectangular room. Trim waste comes from cuts rather than area — every mitre wastes a wedge, and every offcut under about a foot is unusable. A room with alcoves, a bay window or several corners can easily want fifteen or twenty.
Should I subtract doorways?
Yes. Baseboard stops at each side of an opening, so the trim does not cross it. What it does NOT account for is the door casing itself, which the baseboard butts into — that is trim of a different kind and bought separately.
Do I need to subtract anything else?
Usually not. Baseboard runs behind furniture and across the back of alcoves. Only openings that reach the floor come out of the run — a window does not.
Mitre or cope the inside corners?
Coping holds up better. A mitred inside corner opens up as the timber moves with the seasons; a coped joint hides that movement. It takes longer and the calculator does not care either way, but it is why professionals cope.
