Everything in this group has the same problem underneath it: the flat measurement is not the real measurement. A roof is bigger than its footprint, a rafter is longer than its span, and a staircase eats more floor than the hole it comes through.
Each of these tools exists to close that gap.
Roofs: pitch adds area you cannot see
The Roof Shingle Calculator works bundles and squares from the footprint, then applies the pitch — because the pitch adds area a plan view never shows.
This is the mistake in one sentence. Measuring the outline of the building on the ground gives you the area of a flat lid, and a roof is not flat. The steeper the pitch, the further the real surface is from the footprint, and on a steep roof the difference is substantial.
Order from the pitched figure. Shingles are also worth over-ordering slightly — ridge caps, starter courses and waste at valleys all come out of the same bundles.
Rafters: measure the span, deduct the ridge
The Rafter Length Calculator takes span and pitch and gives rafter length including the overhang — and it applies the ridge deduction, which is what catches people who measure to the peak.
The rafter does not reach the peak. It stops at the face of the ridge board, and half that board's thickness comes off each rafter. On its own that is a small number; cut fifty rafters to a length that is half a ridge-thickness too long and none of them fit.
Work from span and pitch, not from a tape held up to the apex.
Stairs: the run is the surprise
The Stair Rise & Run Calculator gives riser height and tread count, and — the part worth having — the floor space a staircase actually eats.
That total run is what makes stairs difficult in a renovation. People plan the opening in the floor above and are surprised by how far into the room below the bottom step lands. A comfortable rise and a comfortable tread multiplied by the number of steps is a long horizontal distance, and it is fixed by the floor-to-floor height, not by preference.
Check the run against the room before committing to the opening. It is much cheaper to discover this on paper.
Walls come into it too
The Wall Stud Calculator sits in this group as well as the drywall one, because framing is framing. Its own trap: spacing counts gaps, not studs — a wall needs one at each end, so the count is always one more than length divided by spacing.
