How Many Pavers Do I Need?

Area divided by the size of one paver, plus waste. The arithmetic, why the pattern matters more than the size, and what the count leaves out.

That's the calculation. The interesting part isn't the arithmetic — it's the waste allowance, because with pavers that's decided by the pattern, not by how big the patio is.

The arithmetic

A patio 12 by 10 feet, using 12 × 12 inch pavers.

Area to pave:

12 × 10 = 120 square feet

Area of one paver. It's measured in inches, so convert:

12 × 12 = 144 square inches 144 ÷ 144 = 1 square foot

That 144 is square inches in a square foot. It's the conversion doing all the work.

Divide:

120 ÷ 1 = 120 pavers

Add waste at 10%: 120 × 1.1 = 132 pavers

A 12-inch paver is a convenient example because it lands on exactly 1 square foot. A classic 4 × 8 inch brick paver is 32 ÷ 144 = 0.222 square feet, so the same patio takes 540 of them before waste.

The pattern decides the waste, not the size

This is the part worth internalising, and it's backwards from how most people estimate.

A bigger patio doesn't waste proportionally more. Waste happens at the edges, where pavers have to be cut — and how badly depends entirely on the pattern:

  • Stack bond (grid, everything lined up) — 5%. Cuts are straight and the offcut often gets used on the opposite edge.
  • Running bond (offset like brickwork) — 10%. Every other row needs a half at each end.
  • Herringbone or any diagonal15–20%. Every single edge paver is an angled cut, and an angled offcut almost never fits anywhere else.

Herringbone is popular on driveways for a real reason: the interlocking pattern resists vehicles pushing the pavers apart far better than a grid does. It just costs you a fifth of the material in cuts.

Ignore the joints

Pavers are laid with sand between them, so each one occupies slightly more ground than its own size.

Accounting for that would reduce the count slightly — which means ignoring it errs towards buying a few spare. That's the direction you want to be wrong in, so ignore the joints.

Mix from several pallets as you lay

Concrete pavers vary in shade between pallets, and sometimes within one. It's not a defect; it's how pigmented concrete cures.

If you work through one pallet at a time, those variations get laid down in visible blocks — a patch of slightly darker patio where pallet two happened to fall. Pull from three or four pallets at once and the variation disperses into the pattern where nobody sees it.

Check the batch or colour code on each pallet when it arrives, too. Ordering more later almost guarantees a different batch.

Buy the edge restraint

The calculator gives you a perimeter figure alongside the paver count, and it's easy to skip.

Pavers laid without a restraint around the edge creep outwards under use and weather. The joints open, sand washes out, and the edge courses start to wander. Plastic or metal edging pinned into the base holds the whole field together — and it's much cheaper than relaying a patio in three years.

What this doesn't count

The pavers are the visible part and often the smaller part of the job:

  • Excavation — how deep depends on what the paving carries
  • Crushed stone base — a garden path needs a few inches; a driveway needs much more
  • Bedding sand — the layer the pavers sit on
  • Joint sand — swept in at the end, polymeric if you want to slow the weeds

Those all scale with area and depth, and the right depth is a load question. A path that only takes footsteps is a very different build from something a car parks on.

Where people get it wrong

  • Forgetting the 144. Dividing square feet by a paver's square inches gives a nonsense answer.
  • Using one waste figure for every pattern. Ordering herringbone at 10% leaves you short every time.
  • Buying exactly the count. Pavers arrive chipped, and you'll break some cutting.
  • Working from one pallet at a time. See above — it's the mistake you can't fix afterwards.
  • Skipping the edge restraint. The patio looks fine on day one and creeps for years.
  • Not planning the fall. Paving needs to shed water away from the house. That's decided during excavation, not afterwards.
  • Digging before checking services. Worth saying plainly: know what's under there first.

The short version

Area ÷ (paver length × width ÷ 144), plus 5% for a stack bond, 10% for a running bond, or 15–20% for herringbone or diagonal, rounded up. Ignore the joints, buy the edge restraint, mix from several pallets as you lay, and remember the base underneath is a separate — and usually bigger — calculation.
