How to Calculate Concrete Block Fill
Learn the simple method for estimating grout or concrete fill in a hollow block wall, then use the calculator to get bags and litres.
Start with the wall, not the bags
If you want to know how much grout or concrete fill a hollow block wall needs, work from the wall size first. Bags come last. That is the cleanest way to avoid overbuying or coming up short halfway through the job.
The basic idea is simple: find the wall area, work out how many blocks are in that wall, then multiply by the grout volume per filled cell.
The calculation in plain English
You only need a few numbers:
- wall length
- wall height
- block length
- block height
- cells per block
- bag yield
Here is the method on paper.
1) Find the wall area
Multiply the wall length by the wall height.
Wall area = wall length × wall height
This gives you the face area of the wall.
2) Find the face area of one block
Multiply the block length by the block height.
Block face area = block length × block height
This tells you how much wall face one block covers.
3) Estimate how many blocks are in the wall
Divide the wall area by the block face area.
Number of blocks = wall area ÷ block face area
If the wall is not a neat whole number of blocks, you still need to round sensibly for real-world ordering. The calculator handles the arithmetic, but the wall itself may need cutting, waste allowance, and end adjustments.
4) Work out the fill per block
A hollow block can have one cell, two cells, or more. Multiply the number of cells per block by the published grout volume per filled cell.
If your calculator asks only for cells per block, it is using that as the count of voids to fill in each block. The fill volume per cell comes from published masonry/manufacturer takeoff tables for standard hollow CMU units, so the tool uses that value to estimate total fill volume. General Shale lists 29.7 cubic feet (1.10 cubic yards) of void volume per 100 square feet of wall for 8-inch Stretchers; 29.7 / 225 = 0.132 cubic feet per filled cell; calculated void volumes with no allowance for waste, settlement, or workmanship.
5) Find the total fill volume
Multiply the number of blocks by the fill needed per block.
Total fill volume = number of blocks × fill per block
That keeps the estimate tied to the actual hollow-core volume instead of implying the fill can be larger than the block voids themselves.
That gives you the total litres of grout or concrete fill needed for the wall.
6) Convert litres into bags
Once you know the total fill volume, divide by the yield of one bag.
Bags needed = total fill volume ÷ bag yield
Then round up. You cannot buy part of a bag in the real world, so if the answer is 12.2 bags, you buy 13.
A quick example
Say you have a wall that is 6 m long and 2.4 m high.
- Wall area = 6 × 2.4 = 14.4 m²
If each block is 0.4 m long and 0.2 m high:
- Block face area = 0.4 × 0.2 = 0.08 m²
- Number of blocks = 14.4 ÷ 0.08 = 180 blocks
If each block has 2 cells and the published grout volume per filled cell works out to 0.5 litre per cell, then:
- Fill per block = 1 litre
- Total fill volume = 180 × 1 = 180 litres
If one bag yields 20 litres:
- Bags needed = 360 ÷ 20 = 18 bags
That is the whole job in a nutshell: wall size, block size, published fill per cell, then bag yield.

How to use the calculator without guessing
The calculator does the arithmetic for you, but it still depends on honest inputs. Measure the wall carefully, use the actual block size, and choose the correct bag yield from the product data.
Use it when you want to:
- estimate grout or concrete fill for a hollow block wall
- turn litres into bags
- check a supplier quote before you order
- compare different bag sizes or yields
If you are pricing a job, it is better to be slightly conservative than to run short. A small allowance is often sensible, especially if the wall has cuts, returns, openings, or uneven joints.
What the numbers do not cover
This is the part people skip, then wonder why the order is wrong.
The calculator gives you a volume estimate. It does not know:
- whether the wall has doors, windows, or other openings
- whether every block cell is being filled or only selected cells
- the effect of waste, spillage, or overfilling
- whether the block dimensions you measured are nominal or actual
- whether your mix, product, or supplier bag yield matches the label exactly
It also does not replace the manufacturer’s instructions. If the bag says a different yield, use the bag data for the product you are actually buying.
Where people get it wrong
Most mistakes come from bad inputs, not bad maths.
- Using wall size instead of block size, or the other way round. Both matter. The wall tells you how much area you need to cover; the block tells you how many units fit into that area.
- Forgetting to round up bags. If the calculator gives 9.1 bags, order 10.
- Mixing units. Do not put metres in one box and millimetres in another unless the calculator is set up for that. Keep everything consistent.
- Ignoring openings. A wall with a big doorway does not need the same fill as a solid wall of the same outer size.
- Assuming every hollow block is the same. Block shape, cell count, and fill method all affect the result.
- Assuming fill can exceed the hollow-core volume. The estimate is based on published fill per cell values for standard CMU units.
A simple paper method you can trust
If you want to do it by hand, use this sequence:
- Wall length × wall height = wall area
- Block length × block height = block face area
- Wall area ÷ block face area = number of blocks
- Number of blocks × fill per block = total fill volume
- Total fill volume ÷ bag yield = bags to buy
- Round up the bag count
That is enough for a solid estimate.
