How Much Fertilizer for My Lawn?
The rate is 1 lb of NITROGEN per 1,000 sq ft — which is 6.25 lb of a 16-4-8 bag. Confuse the two and you're out by a factor of six.
One pound of nitrogen is not one pound of fertilizer
Every lawn fertilizer rate you'll read is stated in pounds of actual nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft. The standard extension recommendation is 1 lb of N per 1,000 sq ft per application.
A 16-4-8 bag is 16% nitrogen. So:
100 ÷ 16 = 6.25 lb of product delivers 1 lb of nitrogen.

Getting it backwards goes badly in both directions
Reading "1 lb of nitrogen" as one pound of product under-feeds by a factor of six. Mostly this just wastes a trip.
Applying 6.25 lb where you needed 1 over-applies by six. That burns the lawn visibly within days and sends the excess into groundwater and surface water.
The over-application direction is why extension services are so insistent about the wording — and it's why this calculator labels its headline output as pounds of PRODUCT, not pounds of nitrogen.
The three numbers on the bag
N-P-K: percentages by weight of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium.
A 16-4-8 bag is 16% nitrogen and 84% other things — including the carrier that lets a spreader distribute it evenly. There's nothing suspicious about that; you couldn't spread pure nitrogen if you wanted to.
Length × width ÷ 1,000 × rate × 100 ÷ N% is the whole formula, and the calculator shows the intermediate ratio separately so you can sanity-check it against the bag's own coverage claim.
Buying it
The bags to buy output rounds up, which is the right direction here — but fertilizer is one of the better things to have a part-bag of left over, because you'll be applying again in a few weeks anyway.
What's worth checking is the one bag covers figure against the coverage claim printed on the bag itself. They should agree. When they don't, it's almost always because the bag is quoting its coverage at a different nitrogen rate than the one you chose — which is useful to know before you trust its spreader settings too.
Store what's left dry and sealed. Granular fertilizer absorbs moisture readily, and a bag that's turned into a solid block won't go through a spreader at any setting.
This is a ceiling, not a target
Unusually for a garden calculation, more is worse.
Research indicates healthy turf can use around 0.9 lb of actual nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft per application, and that applying more than that contributes to water degradation.
Excess nitrogen doesn't sit in the soil waiting to be used. It leaves. Several jurisdictions regulate lawn fertilizer directly for this reason — worth checking whether yours is one of them.
Split across the season, not applied at once
A lawn's annual nitrogen requirement is deliberately delivered across several feeds through the growing season.
A single large dose is both wasteful and damaging — the grass can't use it fast enough and the remainder runs off. How many applications your grass and climate want is a local question, and your extension service will have a schedule for exactly your area.

Slow-release changes the answer in your favour
A bag stating a proportion of slow- or controlled-release nitrogen delivers it over weeks rather than all at once. That makes a higher single application safe, and reduces both burn risk and runoff.
The bag states its own maximum rate, and that figure supersedes any general rule — including this one. It's the most useful thing on the label after the N-P-K numbers.
Do you need the P and the K at all?
Only a soil test can tell you. Many established lawns need neither.
Applying them anyway is money spent on nutrients the soil already holds. Phosphorus in particular is restricted or banned for lawn use in a number of places for water-quality reasons — which is why so many lawn products now carry a zero in the middle position.
A soil test costs very little, and it's the only part of this whole process that's actually about your lawn rather than about lawns in general.
And sweep the driveway
Granules that land on a path or driveway don't feed anything. They go straight into a storm drain with the next rain.
Sweeping them back onto the grass takes a minute and is, per minute, the highest-impact thing on the whole checklist.
