Lawn fertilizer rates are stated in pounds of ACTUAL NITROGEN per 1,000 square feet. The standard recommendation from university extension programmes is 1 pound of actual nitrogen per 1,000 square feet per application. ⚠️ THAT IS NOT ONE POUND OF FERTILIZER. The three numbers on a bag - the N-P-K analysis - are percentages by weight of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. A 16-4-8 bag is 16 percent nitrogen, so a pound of nitrogen needs 100 divided by 16, which is 6.25 pounds of product. The formula is: pounds of fertilizer = pounds of nitrogen wanted x 100 / the first number on the bag. This is the entire calculation, and getting it backwards is the most damaging mistake available. Applying 6.25 pounds of product because you read '1 pound' as product would under-feed by a factor of six. Applying at the nitrogen rate but measuring product would OVER-apply by the same factor, which burns the lawn and runs off into the water. WHY EXTENSION SERVICES CARE ABOUT THE UPPER LIMIT: research indicates healthy turf can use around 0.9 pounds of actual nitrogen per 1,000 square feet per application, and applying more than that contributes to water degradation.
