How Much Water Should I Drink?
The 8×8 rule is 64 oz. The reference figure is 125 for men and 91 for women — and unlike 8×8, it counts every drink and the water in your food.
The 8×8 rule is wrong in two directions at once

64 oz is below both figures — roughly half the men's.
And it counts only plain water, where the reference figures count every beverage plus the water in food.
So it's simultaneously too low as a total and measuring the wrong thing. The National Academies never commented on 8×8 at all, in either direction. It has no identified basis in the evidence — it's a number that circulated until it sounded official.

What "total water" actually means
Drinking water, every other beverage, and the water contained in food.
Fluids supply roughly 81% of the total. Food supplies the rest — about a fifth, arriving on a plate without you thinking about it.
Which means the amount you need to drink is meaningfully below the headline figure:

That drinking figure is what the calculator leads with, because it's the one that corresponds to an action.

Yes, coffee counts
So do tea, milk, juice and soup.
The mild diuretic effect of caffeine at ordinary doses doesn't offset the fluid it arrives in. "Coffee dehydrates you" is the second most durable myth in this area, right behind 8×8.
Fruit, vegetables and most cooked food contribute meaningfully too — which is where that fifth comes from.
It describes people. It doesn't prescribe to you
This is the part that gets lost most often.
An Adequate Intake is set from what adequately hydrated people were observed to consume. It describes a population; it isn't a quota each individual must hit.
The report is explicit on two points worth knowing:
- It exists to prevent the acute effects of dehydration
- The evidence was insufficient to set water intake as a means of reducing chronic disease risk
So drinking beyond the figure has no established benefit, and treating it as a daily target to beat reads more into it than it says.
What genuinely changes the number
Heat, humidity, altitude, exercise, illness with fever or diarrhoea, pregnancy and breastfeeding — all raise requirements, sometimes substantially. Body size matters too.
None of that is in a single population average. Which is why the calculator lets you set the reference and add an exercise allowance rather than pretending to model you.
If you want your real sweat rate: weigh yourself before and after exercise. That's the only actual measurement available, and it varies enormously between people and conditions.
For most healthy people, thirst is a reasonable guide
That's the quiet conclusion of most of this literature, and the reason so few authorities issue a hard number.
It's a less reliable guide for older adults, during hard exercise, and in extreme heat — which is precisely when a deliberate plan is worth having.
And yes, you can drink too much
Uncommon, but real and worth knowing.
Drinking very large volumes rapidly can dilute blood sodium to dangerous levels — a genuine medical emergency that has occurred in endurance events and in water-drinking challenges.
It's a good reason not to treat a large daily number as something to beat. Thirst, spread through the day, is a safer instrument than a quota.
Print the hydration reference — including a table for working out your own sweat rate, which is the only figure on the subject that's actually about you.
