The reference figures come from the National Academies' Dietary Reference Intakes. Women who appear adequately hydrated average about 2.7 litres - 91 fluid ounces - of TOTAL water a day. Men average about 3.7 litres, or 125 fluid ounces. ⚠️ TOTAL WATER MEANS EVERYTHING. Drinking water, every other beverage, and the water contained in food. Fluids supply roughly 81 percent of the total and food the remaining fifth or so. Tea, coffee, milk, juice and soup all count, and so do fruit, vegetables and most cooked food. So the amount you need to DRINK is meaningfully less than the headline figure - about 101 oz for men and 74 for women, on that 81 percent split. That is the number this calculator leads with, because it is the one that corresponds to an action. ⚠️ THE 8x8 RULE IS FOLKLORE, AND IT IS WRONG IN BOTH DIRECTIONS AT ONCE. Eight 8-ounce glasses is 64 ounces. That is well BELOW both reference figures - roughly half the men's - and it counts only plain water, where the reference figures count everything.
