The arithmetic is the 3,500-calorie rule: one pound of body fat is treated as about 3,500 calories, so the days needed are the pounds to lose times 3,500, divided by your daily deficit. ⚠️ THAT RULE IS KNOWN TO BE WRONG, AND IT IS WRONG IN ONE DIRECTION - it OVERESTIMATES weight loss. This is not a fringe objection. Kevin Hall and colleagues published on it directly in the International Journal of Obesity, and the criticism is now mainstream in obesity research. The reason is that the rule is STATIC and a body is not. It assumes the deficit stays the same size forever. In reality a smaller body burns fewer calories at rest and in motion, so the same food intake produces a shrinking deficit as you lose weight - the target moves as you approach it. Adherence also drifts, and some early loss is water rather than fat. The practical consequence: the further out the estimate, the more optimistic it is. A few weeks is roughly right. Six months is not - real loss flattens well before the straight line here does, which is precisely the point at which people conclude they have failed. Knowing the curve bends is the difference between adjusting and quitting. So use this for the SHAPE of the answer, not the date. It is genuinely useful for comparing options - whether a 250 or a 750 calorie deficit is worth the difference to you - and genuinely misleading if you diarise the finish. Where does 3,500 calories per pound come from?
It is an old estimate of the energy stored in a pound of body fat, and it became the standard rule of thumb in weight management because it is easy to apply. It has been used for decades to guide patients, design studies and inform the public. What it is not is an accurate predictor of what happens to a real person over months, and that has been documented rather than merely suspected.
So why does it overestimate?
Because it is a STATIC model applied to a dynamic system. It assumes your deficit stays the same size for the whole period. But as you lose weight your body becomes smaller, and a smaller body burns fewer calories at rest and in movement - so the same food intake yields a progressively smaller deficit. The target moves as you approach it. How wrong does it get?

What is it good for, then?

It is also good for a reality check in the other direction - if a goal needs a deficit you would never sustain, that is worth learning in week one rather than week fifteen.
Why is 500 a day the number everyone uses?
Because 500 times seven is 3,500, which the rule calls a pound. That is the entire derivation. It is a reasonable, moderate target and there is nothing wrong with using it - but it is worth knowing it comes from an arithmetic convenience rather than from anything about human physiology, and that the pound it promises is the optimistic version.
Is a bigger deficit better?
Not straightforwardly, and this calculator cannot answer it because the answer is not arithmetic. Larger deficits are harder to sustain, and an aggressive deficit that lasts three weeks loses to a moderate one that lasts a year. They also carry real considerations around muscle loss, nutrition and health that no formula sees. A 1,000-calorie deficit is aggressive enough that it is worth discussing with a doctor or dietitian rather than simply choosing from a dropdown.
