How to Calculate Your Macros
Fat is 9 calories a gram, not 4 — so a diet that's 25% fat by calories is only 13% fat by weight. And nothing checks that your percentages add to 100.

25% fat by calories is 13% fat by weight
That asymmetry is the single most confusing thing about macros.
A gram of fat carries more than twice the energy of a gram of protein or carbohydrate. So the same share of calories buys you far fewer grams — and the fat number always looks surprisingly small.
The calculator shows fat as a share by weight next to the percentage you entered, so the gap is visible rather than theoretical: 25% by calories comes out at 12.9% by weight.
Whenever someone quotes a macro split, ask which basis they mean. Percent of calories and percent of grams are very different numbers, and almost nobody says which one they're using.
Nothing else checks that your percentages add to 100
Enter 40/30/40 and the calculator returns 200 g carbs, 150 g protein, 89 g fat.
All perfectly plausible. They just describe a diet containing 2,200 calories — 110% of the 2,000 you asked for.
The arithmetic can't object. That's why the total percentage is the headline output here rather than a footnote, and why calories-allocated sits next to your target.
The published ranges are wide on purpose
The Acceptable Macronutrient Distribution Ranges, from the Institute of Medicine's Dietary Reference Intakes:

Notice how much room that leaves. The ranges overlap enormously and do not pin down a single diet — very different eating patterns all sit comfortably inside them.
That's a more honest picture than any single "recommended" split. A split inside the ranges is defensible; one outside is a decision worth making deliberately rather than by accident.
Reading a food label against your targets
One practical wrinkle worth knowing, because it makes the gram figures look wrong when they aren't.
Food labels round. A product listing 0.4 g of fat may print 0 g, and several such items across a day add up to calories your tracking never sees. The same happens in the other direction with fibre, which is a carbohydrate that in many labelling schemes doesn't contribute the full 4 calories per gram.
So a day that tracks as exactly 2,000 kcal is realistically somewhere in a band around it. That isn't an argument against tracking — it's an argument against treating the last 50 calories as meaningful, and against re-planning your split because you landed 3 g off on fat.
The total matters more than the split
Worth saying plainly, because macro planning can become an elaborate way of avoiding it.
Within the AMDR, the evidence that one split beats another is considerably weaker than the evidence that total intake drives weight change.
Protein is the partial exception. There's good reason to keep it toward the higher end when losing weight or building muscle — it supports retaining lean mass and is more satiating per calorie.
So if you're going to be precise about one thing, be precise about the total, and hold protein up. The rest has more slack in it than the decimal places suggest.
Where your calorie number comes from
Not from here.
This converts a calorie total you supply into grams. It has no idea what your total should be, and can't see your size, activity, training or goals.
Estimating daily energy needs is a separate calculation with its own large error bars — and turning a rough calorie estimate into precise-looking gram targets is a good way to feel far more certain than the underlying numbers justify.
Print the planning sheet — it has a log, because a few honest days of tracking will tell you more than any amount of adjusting the split beforehand.
