How to Scale a Recipe Up or Down
The multiplier is the easy part. The hard part is that 1.125 cups isn't a thing you can measure — and that a few ingredients shouldn't be multiplied at all.
The arithmetic takes five seconds. The problems come after
A recipe serves 4, you need it to serve 6. Multiply everything by 1.5. Done.
Except the recipe wanted ¾ cup of milk, and ¾ × 1.5 = 1.125 cups, and nobody owns a one-eighth-cup measure. So you stand there estimating, and estimating is how a scaled recipe quietly stops being the recipe.
1.125 cups is 1 cup plus 2 tablespoons. That you can do with what's already in the drawer.

The arithmetic
Serves 4, you want 6:
6 ÷ 4 = 1.5 — multiply every ingredient by this
¾ cup × 1.5 = 1.125 cups
Into something measurable. A US cup is 16 tablespoons, so:
1.125 × 16 = 18 tablespoons = 1 cup + 2 tablespoons
Those conversions are exact by definition, not approximations: 1 cup = 16 tablespoons = 48 teaspoons.
The measured in dropdown takes tablespoons and teaspoons as well as cups, which is what you want for the small stuff — scaling ¾ teaspoon of baking powder is a more delicate job than scaling ¾ cup of milk.
What you should NOT multiply by 1.5
This is the part that makes doubled recipes fail, and no calculator can decide it for you.

Raising agents are the one that bites hardest. Double the baking powder in a doubled cake and it rises fast, collapses, and tastes faintly soapy. Past double, back it off to around three quarters of what the multiplier says.
Time doesn't scale, and neither does the tin
Cooking time depends on how deep the food is, not how much of it there is.
Double a cake batter into the same tin and it's twice as deep — it needs considerably longer at a lower temperature, or the outside sets before the middle knows anything is happening. Split the same batter across two tins and it takes roughly the original time.
Doubled soup in a wider pot can even be faster, because there's more surface area.
Match pans by area, not by dimensions. Doubling a recipe in a 9-inch round tin does not mean reaching for an 18-inch one — that's four times the area, not twice. Two 9-inch tins, or one 13×9, is about double.
The scaled egg problem
Half an egg is a real requirement and a slightly silly one.
Beat a whole egg, then measure out what you need — a large egg is roughly 3 tablespoons out of the shell, so half is about 1.5.
Worth the bother in baking, where an extra half egg genuinely changes the texture. In a stew, round to a whole egg and get on with it.
Scaling down has its own trap
Going the other way, the multiplier is under 1 and the amounts get small fast. A third of a cup of something is 5 tablespoons plus a teaspoon — fine. A third of a teaspoon of baking soda is where measuring accuracy falls apart.
At small quantities, weigh rather than measure if you possibly can. Volume measurement has a fixed error, and that error is a much bigger share of ⅓ teaspoon than it is of a cup.
Write it out before you start
The single most useful habit here: rewrite the whole ingredient list at the new amounts before you turn the oven on. Don't scale as you go.
Scaling mid-recipe with your hands covered in flour is how one ingredient gets multiplied twice and another gets missed entirely. It's also how you discover the mixing bowl is too small at the worst possible moment.
Print the recipe scaling sheet, rewrite the list once, and cook from that. There's a blank on it for the time it actually took — fill that in, and the second time you cook it at this size it stops being an experiment.
