Is That XP Boost Actually Worth It?
The break-even is the boost percentage times its duration. A 10% boost lasting 20 minutes is worth two minutes of setup — less than the walk.
A boost isn't free XP
It's extra XP minus the time you spent getting it.
That second half is what gets left out. Every minute travelling to a vendor, running the activity that grants the buff, queueing or waiting on a cooldown is a minute you weren't earning at your normal rate. It comes straight off the top.

The rule worth memorising
Break-even setup time = boost percentage × duration.
That's it. And once you know it, most of these decisions stop needing a calculator:

You can check it in the tool: set the setup time to exactly 30 minutes on the default 50%/60min boost and the net gain reads 0, with extra XP and forgone XP both at 25,000.
Your XP rate doesn't matter
This surprises people, and it's worth understanding.
Set the base rate ten times higher and the break-even stays at 30 minutes. The slack stays at 15. The net gain expressed as minutes of grinding stays at 15. Only the raw XP figure scales — 12,500 becomes 125,000.
Both sides scale together and cancel: a faster player gains more from the boost and gives up more during setup, in exactly the same proportion.
So efficient players shouldn't be pickier about boosts. They simply get more out of the identical decision.
Use active minutes, not the icon
This is the usual way the answer gets flattered.
What counts is time spent actively earning under the boost — not the time it exists. A one-hour buff burning while you're in a queue, reading a guide, reorganising bags or walking somewhere is worth a fraction of its face value.
For a lot of people those two numbers differ substantially, and entering the icon duration is how this calculation says yes when the honest answer is no.
When the answer is negative
XP the boost actually nets you going below zero is a common and useful result, especially for small boosts with any travel involved.
At 10% for 20 minutes with the default 15-minute setup, the net is −10,833 XP — you'd have been better off just grinding.
But the fix usually isn't abandoning the boost. It's reducing the setup: grab it while passing rather than making a trip, or stack the acquisition with something you were doing anyway.
A boost picked up in passing has near-zero setup cost, and at zero setup even a small boost is always worth taking.
Where the rule changes how you play
The break-even rule has a consequence worth acting on: long boosts justify real effort, short ones justify almost none.
A two-hour 100% buff is worth up to two hours of setup — you could reasonably spend a whole evening's first half arranging it. A fifteen-minute 20% buff is worth three minutes, which rules out anything involving a loading screen.
That splits boosts into two categories that want completely different handling. The long, large ones are worth planning a session around: get them first, deliberately, and accept the setup. The short, small ones are only ever worth taking opportunistically, and going out of your way for one is a reliable way to lose time while feeling efficient.
The trap is treating all boosts as uniformly good because they're labelled as bonuses. Setup time to spare going negative is the tool telling you which category you're in.
Two things it doesn't model
Stacking. Some games add boosts, some multiply, some cap the total — so a second boost is often worth much less than it claims. If you're already boosted, enter the extra percentage the new one actually delivers. Checking your rate with and without it settles that in a couple of minutes.
Money and resources. This weighs time only. A boost bought with currency needs a separate judgement about whether that currency was worth more elsewhere.
What the tool gives you is the time saved, expressed as minutes of ordinary grinding — which is exactly the input that decision needs. If a boost saves twenty minutes and costs currency you'd happily earn back in ten, take it. If you wouldn't, don't.
