How this is calculated

A BOOST IS NOT FREE XP - IT IS EXTRA XP MINUS THE TIME YOU SPENT GETTING IT. That second half is what people leave out. Every minute spent travelling to a vendor, running an activity that grants the buff, queueing, or waiting on a cooldown is a minute you were not earning at your normal rate, and it comes straight off the top. ⚠️ THE BREAK-EVEN IS BEAUTIFULLY SIMPLE: THE BOOST PERCENTAGE TIMES ITS DURATION. A 50% boost lasting an hour is worth up to 30 minutes of setup. A 100% boost lasting an hour is worth up to a full hour of setup. A 10% boost lasting 20 minutes is worth two minutes, which is less time than it takes to walk anywhere. Once you know that rule you can judge most boosts without a calculator at all, and that is genuinely the point of this page. YOUR BASE RATE DOES NOT APPEAR IN THE BREAK-EVEN, which surprises people and is worth understanding. Both the gain and the cost scale with how fast you earn, so it cancels out entirely - a boost that is worth acquiring for a fast player is worth acquiring for a slow one, and the setup time you can justify is exactly the same. The base rate only affects the SIZE of the net gain, not whether there is one. ⚠️ THE BOOST MUST BE ACTIVE WHILE YOU ARE ACTUALLY EARNING. A one-hour buff burning while you are in a queue, reading a guide, sorting your inventory or walking somewhere is worth a fraction of its face value. The duration to enter is the time you will spend actively earning under it, not the time on the icon - and for a lot of people those are very different numbers. STACKING IS NOT MODELLED. Some games add boosts together, some multiply them, and some cap the total, so a second boost is often worth much less than the first. If you are already boosted, the honest figure to enter is the extra percentage the new one actually delivers on top of what you have, which may be well below its stated value. COST IN MONEY OR RESOURCES IS ALSO NOT MODELLED - only time. A boost bought with currency needs a separate judgement about whether that currency was worth more elsewhere, and this tool cannot make it. What it can tell you is how much time the boost saves, which is the input to that decision.

Common questions

What is the break-even rule?
The boost percentage multiplied by its duration, and that is the whole thing. A 50% boost lasting an hour justifies up to 30 minutes of setup. A 100% boost lasting an hour justifies a full hour. A 10% boost lasting 20 minutes justifies two minutes, which is less than it takes to walk to most vendors. Once you know that rule you can judge most boosts in your head without opening anything, which is genuinely the point - the calculator is for the awkward cases, not the obvious ones.
Why doesn't my XP rate affect the break-even?
Because it scales both sides equally and cancels out. A faster player gains more extra XP from the boost, and also gives up more XP during setup, in exactly the same proportion - so the setup time that can be justified is identical for everyone. This surprises people who assume efficient players should be pickier about boosts. They should not; they simply get more out of the same decision. Your rate only affects the SIZE of the net gain, never whether the gain exists.
What counts as setup time?
Everything between deciding to get the boost and earning under it. Travelling to a vendor, running the activity that grants the buff, queueing, waiting on a cooldown, and any faff with inventory or currency along the way. All of it is time you were not earning at your normal rate, so all of it comes off the top. People routinely count only the obvious part - the trip - and leave out the five minutes of preparation either side, which is often what turns a marginal boost negative.
Should I use the duration on the icon?
No, and this is the most common way the figure gets flattered. What matters is the time you spend ACTIVELY EARNING under the boost, not the time it exists. A one-hour buff running while you are in a queue, reading a guide, reorganising your bags or walking somewhere is worth a fraction of its face value. For a lot of people those two numbers differ substantially, and entering the icon duration produces an answer that says yes when the honest answer is no.
What if I already have another boost running?
Then enter the extra percentage the new one actually delivers, not its stated value - which may be considerably less. Some games add boosts together, some multiply them, and some cap the total, so a second boost stacked on a first is often worth much less than it claims. The tool does not model stacking because the rules differ by game and sometimes by boost type. Working out what the second one really adds is a matter of checking your rate with and without it, which takes a couple of minutes and settles the question.
What about boosts that cost money or resources?
This only weighs time. A boost bought with currency needs a separate judgement about whether that currency was worth more spent elsewhere, and no calculator can make that call for you. What this can give you is the time the boost saves, expressed as minutes of ordinary grinding - which is exactly the input that decision needs. If a boost saves twenty minutes and costs an amount of currency you would happily earn back in ten, it is worth it; if you would not, it is not.
The net gain is negative. Does that mean boosts are pointless?
It means THAT boost, with THAT setup time, is not worth it - which is a useful and quite common answer, particularly for small percentage boosts with any travel involved. The fix is usually not to abandon the boost but to reduce the setup: grab it while passing rather than making a trip, or stack the acquisition with something else you were doing anyway. A boost picked up in passing has near-zero setup cost, and at zero setup even a small boost is always worth taking.
