What Does My BMI Actually Mean?
The number is easy to get and easy to over-read. Here's what it measures, what it provably can't, and the more useful figure sitting underneath it.
The index is the least useful number on the page
"Your BMI is 24.3." Now what?
It's an abstraction — a ratio with units nobody thinks in. The genuinely useful version of the same fact is: at 5 ft 8 in, the healthy range is 121.7 to 164.4 pounds. That's the number on your bathroom scale, and it comes with something the index hides — the range is about 43 pounds wide, which is usually wider than people expect.

The arithmetic
BMI is weight in kilograms divided by height in metres, squared. Everything converts to metric first.
160 lb × 0.45359237 = 72.57 kg
68 in × 2.54 = 172.72 cm = 1.7272 m
72.57 ÷ 1.7272² = 72.57 ÷ 2.983 = 24.3
Both conversion factors are exact by definition, so the answer is identical whichever units you enter.
The bands, and how much to read into them

These are a population-level convention, and the boundaries are round numbers picked for convenience. Nothing physical changes between 24.9 and 25.1. If you're near a line, the honest reading is "near a line" — not "on this side of it."
What it provably cannot measure
BMI knows two things about you: your weight and your height. That's the whole input. So it cannot know:
- How much of that weight is muscle. Muscle is denser than fat, so a well-muscled person carrying very little fat is routinely classified overweight — sometimes obese. This is the best-known limitation and it's a real one.
- Where your body stores fat. Abdominal fat carries more metabolic risk than the same weight on hips or legs. BMI cannot see the difference.
- Anything else at all. Fitness, diet, sleep, blood pressure, blood sugar. All of those matter more to your health than the ratio, and none appear in it.
The inverse problem is less discussed and just as real: someone can sit comfortably mid-range while carrying very little muscle and a lot of abdominal fat. A "normal" BMI is not a clean bill of health.
It was never built for this
Adolphe Quetelet worked out the ratio in the 1830s, to describe populations. It wasn't intended as a measure of individual fatness, and it certainly wasn't intended to diagnose anyone.
It survives because it's cheap, needs no equipment, and gives the same answer twice. Those are real virtues for tracking a population's health over decades. They are not the same as being precise about you.
It doesn't apply equally to everyone
The standard thresholds were derived largely from populations of European descent. Several health bodies use lower cut-offs for people of South Asian, Chinese and other ancestries, where metabolic risk shows up at a lower BMI. Age and sex change what a given number implies too.
The calculator shows the standard WHO bands because they're the standard. Whether they're the right bands for you is a clinician's question.
And it does not apply to children or teenagers at all — they're assessed against age-and-sex percentile charts, because a growing body's healthy ratio shifts year by year. It's not meaningful in pregnancy either.
The measurement worth adding
If you take one thing from this: measure your waist.
It costs a tape measure and adds most of what BMI is missing, because where fat sits matters as much as how much there is. Waist-to-height ratio is a common companion figure for exactly that reason.
Measure at the navel, tape level, breathing out normally. Same spot every time.
Track the trend, not the reading
A single measurement tells you almost nothing. Day-to-day weight swings are mostly water.
Weigh monthly rather than daily, at the same time of day, on the same scale. Write it down next to your waist measurement and a note about how you actually feel — that third column is the one that makes the other two mean something.
Print the body measurement log and give it a year.
