What Is Actually Using Your Data Allowance?
One hour of 4K uses as much as a hundred hours of music. Switching quality changes your month by more than any habit will.
It's video. It's basically only video
Netflix publish their own per-hour figures, and they're the numbers worth knowing:

Music runs about 0.072 GB an hour at a typical 160 kbps. A one-to-one HD video call is around 0.68.
So one hour of 4K uses about as much as a hundred hours of music.

Two hours a night is about 60. Include anything playing in the background.
Netflix's own published figures. They are 'up to' - variable bitrate means real usage often lands below.
0.072 is a 160 kbps stream. Use 0.144 for 320 kbps, or 0.043 for 96 kbps.
About 0.68 for a one-to-one HD call at 1.5 Mbps. Group calls run higher.
Browsing, social, downloads, and the big one - console and app updates. Usually underestimated.
Set it high if you are unlimited - the comparison outputs just stop mattering.

At a fairly ordinary month — 60 hours of video, 40 of music, 20 of calls — video is 83% of the total.
One setting changes the month more than any habit
Sixty hours of video a month:

Not a minute more watched. Only the setting changed — and the 240 GB difference exceeds many people's entire allowance.
On a phone or a small screen the visible difference between HD and 4K is close to nothing. Which makes this the cheapest large saving available, and the first place to look if you keep going over.
At 4K, video rises to 92% of the total. Everything else becomes a rounding error.
The figures are ceilings, not measurements
Netflix says "up to" for a good reason. Streaming uses variable bitrate — a quiet dialogue scene consumes far less than a fast-moving one, and most services quietly drop quality when the connection struggles.
So real usage tends to land under these numbers, which makes them safe to plan with.
Two exceptions worth knowing: live sport at a high frame rate runs heavy, and other services encode differently from Netflix. The tiers here are a good general guide because the underlying resolutions are similar, but if one service dominates your month, find its own published figures.
Why your real usage is higher
Almost always because of things nobody counts as usage:
- System and game updates. A single modern game update can be 50 GB, arriving with no warning.
- Cloud photo backup — especially video backup.
- Automatic app updates.
- Autoplay previews that run while you browse a streaming app.
That's what the "everything else" figure is for, and it's the one people underestimate most.
If your provider's number is well above your estimate, the gap almost always lives here rather than in your streaming.
Calibrate it instead of guessing
The honest way to use the "everything else" input: get last month's real total from your provider's usage page, enter your video, music and call hours, then set everything else to whatever makes the total match.
That figure is now calibrated to your actual life rather than to an average — and it's the number to reuse next month.
On gigabytes
This tool and your provider both use decimal gigabytes — a billion bytes — which is how data is metered and billed.
Your operating system may report the same transfer in binary units and still call them GB, which differs by about 7%. That's not enough to explain a serious discrepancy, so if your provider's figure is far above your own measurement, look for background transfers rather than a units problem.
What this is actually for
It plans a month. It doesn't measure one — the only authoritative figure is your provider's usage page.
Where it earns its place is deciding what to change after you've seen that number, or working out whether an allowance is enough before you sign a contract.
Run your normal month. Then run it again with the video quality one step lower. The difference between those two totals is the most effective single change available to you.
