How this is calculated
VIDEO IS THE WHOLE CALCULATION AND EVERYTHING ELSE IS ROUNDING. Netflix publish their own figures: up to 0.3 GB an hour on the lowest setting, 0.7 on medium, 1 for standard definition, 3 for HD and 7 for 4K. Those are the numbers in the quality dropdown here. Music and video calls are an order of magnitude smaller, and browsing smaller still - so if an allowance is being missed, the answer is almost always video and almost never anything else. ⚠️ ONE SETTING CHANGES THE MONTH MORE THAN ANY HABIT DOES. Sixty hours of HD is 180 GB. The same sixty hours in 4K is 420 GB. Nothing about how much you watched changed - only the quality setting - and the difference is larger than most people's entire allowance. If you need to cut usage, this is the first place to look and it costs you almost nothing on a small screen. NETFLIX'S FIGURES ARE 'UP TO', AND THAT MATTERS. Streaming is variable bitrate, so a quiet dialogue scene uses far less than a fast-moving one, and most services drop quality automatically when the connection struggles. Real usage tends to come in under these numbers rather than over, which makes them a sensible planning ceiling rather than an estimate. OTHER SERVICES ARE NOT NETFLIX. YouTube, Disney+, Prime Video and Twitch all encode differently, and live sport at high frame rates is heavier than the same duration of drama. The quality tiers here are a good general guide because the underlying resolutions are similar, but if one service dominates your usage it is worth finding its own published figures. ⚠️ THE THING PEOPLE FORGET IS THE BACKGROUND. Console and phone updates, cloud photo backups, app updates and the automatic previews that play while you browse a streaming app all consume data you never chose to spend. A single modern game update can be 50 GB or more, which is a serious fraction of a monthly cap arriving with no warning. That is what the 'everything else' figure is for, and it is usually underestimated. GB HERE ARE DECIMAL, matching how providers meter and bill - a gigabyte is a billion bytes. Your operating system may report the same transfer in binary units and call them GB too, which is a different number by about seven percent. THIS PLANS A MONTH; IT DOES NOT MEASURE ONE. That figure is then calibrated to your actual life rather than to an average, and it is the number to reuse next month.
- Is a GB here the same as the one my computer shows?
- Not quite. This tool and your provider both use decimal gigabytes - a billion bytes - which is how data is metered and billed. Your operating system may report the same transfer in binary units and still call them GB, which is a different number by about seven percent. It is not enough to explain a serious discrepancy, so if your provider's figure is far above your own measurement, look for background transfers rather than for a units problem.
- Can I use this to check a bill?
