What Is PPI, and Does It Actually Matter?
A 43-inch 4K screen is less sharp than a 27-inch 1440p one. Resolution is a pixel count — sharpness is how thinly those pixels are spread.
More pixels, less sharp
A 43-inch 4K monitor has more than twice the pixels of a 27-inch 1440p one.
It is also less sharp: 102 PPI against 109.
That's the whole subject. Resolution tells you how many pixels there are. It says nothing about how thinly they're spread — and only the second one is visible.

The arithmetic
Diagonal pixels — Pythagoras across the panel:
√(2560² + 1440²) = 2,937 pixels
PPI — divide by the diagonal in inches:
2,937 ÷ 27 = 108.8 PPI
The physical width and height come from the same triangle, scaled. It works because pixels are square on every mainstream display, so the pixel grid and the panel are the same shape. (Sanity check: the width and height it gives back reconstruct the 27-inch diagonal exactly.)

Two things jump out.
A 27-inch 1080p monitor is one of the softest things on the list — the same pixels that look fine at 24 inches are stretched over 26% more area.
And 43-inch 4K sits below 27-inch 1440p, despite the far bigger number on the box.
Distance does as much work as density
This is the part the calculator can't do for you, because it depends on where your head is.
A 55-inch 4K television is about 80 PPI — softer than a 27-inch 1080p monitor. It looks flawless from three metres and unusable on a desk.
Nothing about the panel changed. Only the distance did.
Which is why there's no single "good" PPI number: a phone at 30 cm needs several times the density of a monitor at arm's length, which needs far more than a TV across a room.
Dot pitch runs backwards
Monitor specs often quote dot pitch instead — the distance between pixel centres in millimetres.
25.4 ÷ PPI. So 108.8 PPI is a 0.2335 mm dot pitch.
It measures the same thing from the other end, which means smaller is sharper — the opposite direction from PPI. Specs quote one or the other without explaining which way round it goes, and it's a reliable way to compare two screens and reach the wrong conclusion.
High PPI means scaling, not more workspace
Worth knowing before you buy something very dense expecting more room.
Operating systems assume a rough density. On a high-PPI display, text and interface elements come out tiny unless the system scales them up — and once it does, you're seeing the same amount of content, rendered more smoothly.
That's the correct outcome. The extra pixels go into sharpness, not area. If what you want is more workspace, you want a bigger or wider screen, not a denser one.
Check the width, not the diagonal
Manufacturers only quote the diagonal, which is a poor guide to whether something fits.
Two 34-inch monitors with different aspect ratios have noticeably different widths, and ultrawides are far broader than the diagonal suggests. The calculator gives you the actual width and height — measure your desk before ordering, and remember that's the panel; the stand and bezels add more.
What PPI doesn't explain
Two monitors at identical PPI can render text visibly differently. That's subpixel arrangement — how the red, green and blue elements are laid out within each pixel — plus panel coating, contrast, and how your OS renders text.
PPI counts pixels. It's the single most useful number for comparing sharpness, and it isn't the only one that matters.
