How to Buy Lumber Without Getting Caught Out
A 2×4 is 1.5 by 3.5. Board feet are priced on wood you never receive. And area gives the wrong sheet count in both directions.

Timber is sold in units that describe something other than what you take home. That is not sharp practice — every one of these conventions exists for a reason, and all of them are older than the machines that made them inaccurate.
But the result is the same in each case: the number the trade quotes is not the number you need, and the gap between them is where projects come up short, loads come in overweight, and someone drives back to the yard.

Board feet are priced on wood you never receive
The Board Foot Calculator works out volume and cost for hardwood, and it asks for the rough thickness rather than the finished one — which looks like a mistake and is not.
Hardwood is priced from the thickness it was sawn at, before it was dried and planed. A board sold as one inch arrives closer to three-quarters. You pay for the inch.
It is also sold in quarters — quarter-inch increments, spoken aloud as "four-quarter" rather than "four over four":

The numerator is what you want; the 4 never changes. Knowing this is the difference between ordering confidently and pointing.
That is genuinely correct rather than a swindle: the yard bought, dried and stored the full inch, and the wood that came off in the planer was real wood that someone paid for. But it means the volume you are billed for is not the volume you take home, and using your finished measurement understates the cost.
Five boards of 1 × 6 × 8 ft come to 20 board feet and $130 at $6.50 a foot. Measure the same boards after planing and you would price the job about a quarter light.
Plywood is a layout problem, not an area problem
This is the one that costs people a second trip.
The Plywood Sheet Calculator counts by layout rather than by area, because sheets do not subdivide. A 16 × 12 ft floor is 192 square feet, and a 4 × 8 sheet covers 32 — so the area calculation says six, or seven with waste allowed.
The real answer is six or eight, depending which way you run them:

Same room, same sheets, two sheets of difference — and the area method lands between the two, so it is wrong in both directions at once. It cannot tell you which orientation you are using, and orientation is the whole question.
Run both before you buy. Sometimes the cheaper layout is also the one with more joins in the wrong place, and that is a decision worth making deliberately rather than discovering on site.

Work a load's weight from the label and you overstate it badly:

A 52% overstatement — which on a real load is the difference between fitting your payload and being over it. The tool shows both so the size of the error is visible rather than described.
⚠️ And moisture beats species. The same 50 boards are 510 lb dried and 656 lb green, and pressure-treated timber is wet from the process for weeks while looking and pricing like finished stock. If a load is anywhere near a limit, plan against the green figure.

None of these is a trick. Each is a trade convention that made sense when it was set and now describes something adjacent to what you are buying.
The practical habit is the same for all three: measure the thing, not the name. Rough thickness for pricing, real dimensions for weight, and an actual layout for sheets.

- Weigh a load from actual dimensions, and against the green figure if it is close
- Read the payload from the door sticker, and subtract yourself first
- Check overhang rules and have straps to hand before loading
