How to Convert Units Without Getting Caught Out

The arithmetic is exact and never the problem. What catches people is that an ounce is two units, a pint is two sizes, and a temperature won't scale.

Unit conversion has a reputation for being fiddly, and it isn't. Since the international yard and pound agreement of 1959, the imperial units are defined against the metric ones — the pound is exactly 0.45359237 kilograms, the inch exactly 25.4 millimetres. These aren't measurements anybody took. They're definitions several countries agreed on.

So a conversion adds no error of its own. If your answer is wrong, the arithmetic almost certainly wasn't the reason.

Here's what actually goes wrong, in the order it costs you money.

1. Two different units share a name

This is the expensive one, and no amount of care with the sums will save you from it.

An ounce is two units. The one on your kitchen scale is the avoirdupois ounce at 28.349523125 grams. The one gold and silver are priced in is the troy ounce at 31.1034768 grams — about 9.7% heavier. Read a precious-metal quote as if it were an ordinary ounce and you've overstated the metal by roughly a tenth.

A ton is three weights: the US short ton at 2,000 lb, the UK long ton at 2,240 lb, and the metric tonne at exactly 1,000 kg. Freight quotes and older engineering documents don't reliably say which.

A pint is two sizes, and this one reverses in a way that catches people who already know about it. A US pint is 473.176473 mL; an Imperial pint is 568.26125 mL — about 20% bigger. But the US fluid ounce is about 4% larger than the Imperial one. The bigger pint is made of smaller ounces, because a US pint is 16 fluid ounces and an Imperial pint is 20.

The Weight & Mass Converter and the Volume & Capacity Converter both handle this the same way: they refuse to offer the ambiguous unit in the same dropdown. No troy ounce beside the avoirdupois one, no dry pint beside the liquid one. Two units sharing a name in one list is precisely how the mistake gets made.

2. Temperature doesn't scale

Every other converter multiplies, because zero means the same thing in both units — zero metres is zero feet.

Temperature scales don't share a zero. So converting needs a multiplication and a shift, and one consequence matters more than the rest: a difference converts differently from a temperature. A rise of 10°C is a rise of 18°F, not 50°F. Use the 9/5 ratio and drop the 32 entirely.

The Temperature Converter also carries oven gas mark, and leaves it blank outside the range where the scale actually exists — below mark 1 it turns to fractions, and above mark 10 no domestic oven has the position.

3. Recipes are written in the wrong dimension

The Cups to Grams Converter exists because a cup is a volume and a recipe usually wants a mass. A cup of flour varies by around 20% depending on whether it was scooped or spooned and levelled — a bigger swing than most people would accept between two versions of a recipe.

Where a recipe offers a weight, take it. It's reproducible in a way a cup never is.

4. Mixing dimensions inside one calculation

That's the point. A single dropdown offering length, weight and volume together lets you ask for kilograms expressed in metres — and answer confidently a question that has no answer. One dimension per tool means every conversion on the page is a real one.

The habits that prevent most of it

  • Convert once, at the start, and stay in one unit. Mixing halfway through is the most common route to a plausible wrong answer.
  • Write the qualifier down. Not "8 oz" but "8 oz avoirdupois". Not "a pint" but "a US pint".
  • Watch the near-misses. 50 lb is 22.68 kg and 23 kg is 50.7 lb — close enough to look interchangeable, far enough apart to matter at an airport check-in desk.
  • Use the exact figures for anything ordered, shipped, dosed or paid for. They're definitions. There's no reason to accept an approximation of one.
