How this is calculated

THE COUNT COMES FROM THE BRICK PLUS ITS JOINT, not from the brick alone. Each brick occupies its own face area plus one joint in each direction, so: bricks per square foot = 144 / ((brick length + joint) x (brick height + joint)) A standard modular brick is 7.625 by 2.25 inches, and with a 3/8 inch joint that gives 6.86 per square foot. The Brick Industry Association's estimating tables round this to 6.75, and many calculators simply use 7 - the spread between those figures is small on a garden wall and material on a house. ⚠️ NOMINAL SIZE IS NOT ACTUAL SIZE, AND THE DIFFERENCE IS EXACTLY THE JOINT. A modular brick is called 8 inches long and measures 7.625, because 7.625 plus a 3/8 inch joint is exactly 8.0. That is designed, not sloppy: it means bricks and their joints tile neatly onto an 8-inch grid, which is what lets openings and courses line up. The same trap as nominal lumber - a 2x4 is not 2 by 4 - and it catches people the same way. ⚠️ THE JOINT WIDTH IS A REAL VARIABLE. On a standard brick, tightening the joint from 3/8 to 1/4 inch raises the count from 6.86 to 7.31 per square foot - about 6.6 percent more bricks. Over a large wall that is a lot of bricks in either direction, and it is decided by how the wall is laid rather than by what is ordered. A DOUBLE-WYTHE WALL DOUBLES EVERYTHING. Two bricks thick means twice the bricks per square foot of wall face - about 13.7 on the default figures. Whether your wall is one wythe or two is a structural question, not an aesthetic one. WASTE OF 5 TO 10 PERCENT IS NORMAL, and brick genuinely needs it: bricks arrive broken, cuts at openings and wall ends produce unusable offcuts, and you want whole bricks to choose from rather than laying whatever is left. ORDER FROM THE SAME BATCH in one go - brick colour varies between production runs, and a patch laid from a later batch is visible for the life of the wall. That is a much better reason to over-order than the breakage is. WHAT THIS DOES NOT COVER: mortar quantity, which depends on joint width, brick absorption and how much you drop; foundations, which brickwork needs and which are a code matter; wall ties, damp-proof courses, movement joints, lintels over openings, and the height limits that apply to free-standing walls. A brick wall is a structure. This counts the bricks.

How is bricks-per-square-foot worked out?

What is a wythe?
One brick's thickness of wall. A single-wythe wall is one brick thick; a double-wythe wall is two, with the two leaves tied together. Doubling the wythes doubles the bricks per square foot of wall face - about 13.7 on the default figures. Which one you need is a structural question rather than an aesthetic one, and it depends on the wall's height, what it supports and what it has to resist. That is a matter for your local code, not for a calculator.
Why order 10 percent extra?
Two reasons, and the second is the important one. Bricks arrive broken, cuts at openings and wall ends leave unusable offcuts, and you want whole bricks to choose from rather than laying whatever is left. But the better reason is colour: brick shade varies between production runs, so a patch laid later from a different batch stays visible for the life of the wall. Order the whole job in ONE batch and keep the spares - matching a brick two years later is close to impossible.
What about the mortar?
Not calculated here, deliberately, because it depends on the joint width, how absorbent the bricks are and how much you drop - and the last of those is not something a formula can know. What is worth saying is that mortar is the cheap part and the part that decides whether the wall lasts, so it is a poor place to economise. The same applies to everything else this does not count: foundations, wall ties, damp-proof courses, movement joints and lintels over openings. A brick wall is a structure; this counts the bricks in it.
