How this is calculated

This tool uses the standard dehydration definition from clinical teaching: 5% dehydration means a loss of fluid equal to 5% of body weight. It also uses the widely cited 2% body-weight loss threshold as the point where performance can start to decline; the American College of Sports Medicine's position stand on exercise and fluid replacement says the goal of drinking during exercise is to prevent dehydration greater than 2% of body weight. The calculator assumes all planned fluid loss is from sweat and that any fluid you drink during the session offsets that loss one-for-one. It does not estimate urine loss, vomiting, diarrhea, or electrolyte needs. The math is simple: projected net loss = sweat loss minus fluid intake, then that net loss is converted into pounds and into percent of body weight. If intake is greater than sweat loss, the result is clamped at zero so the tool never shows negative dehydration. This is a planning tool, not a diagnosis. If someone is ill, dizzy, confused, fainting, or unable to keep fluids down, they need medical care rather than a calculator.

What does 2% dehydration mean?
It means losing about 2% of your body weight in fluid. For a 160 lb person, that is about 3.2 lb.
Why do you ask for sweat rate in L/hour?
That is the most common way to measure it in exercise settings, and it converts cleanly into pounds for the calculation.
Can I use this for illness?
No. This is for planning exercise or heat exposure, not for diagnosing dehydration from vomiting, diarrhea, or fever.
