THE MEASUREMENT IS SIMPLE AND HAS TO BE DONE ON YOU. Weigh yourself before a session and after it, ideally undressed and towelled dry both times, and note everything you drank. Sweat loss is the weight you lost PLUS the fluid you took in, minus any urine passed, divided by the hours. Most people land between 0.5 and 1.5 litres an hour, but the spread between individuals is large enough that a published average is close to useless for any particular person. ⚠️ YOUR SWEAT RATE IS A CEILING, NOT A TARGET. This is the single most important thing on the page. Exercise-associated hyponatremia - dangerously low blood sodium - is almost always the result of drinking TOO MUCH fluid, and the standard advice for avoiding it is to make certain that fluid intake does not exceed sweat loss. It causes rapid swelling of the brain and can lead to seizures, coma and death. It has killed people at endurance events, and the victims were usually drinking diligently. WHICH MEANS FULL REPLACEMENT IS NOT REQUIRED EITHER. The American College of Sports Medicine considers 0.4 to 0.8 litres an hour optimal during intense endurance activity - higher for faster, heavier athletes in the heat, lower for slower, lighter ones in the cold. Note that this is often LESS than a measured sweat rate. Finishing a session slightly down on fluid is normal and tolerable; finishing it up on fluid is the dangerous direction. THIRST IS A BETTER GUIDE THAN A SCHEDULE FOR MOST PEOPLE. Drinking to thirst both minimises hyponatremia risk and prevents serious dehydration for the large majority of exercisers. The reason to measure a sweat rate at all is to know roughly what your body is doing and to spot an extreme, not to replace thirst with a stopwatch. SODIUM MATTERS FOR LONGER SESSIONS. Including sodium at roughly 0.5 to 0.7 grams per litre of fluid is recommended for exercise lasting longer than an hour - it improves palatability, helps fluid retention, and may help prevent hyponatremia in people who drink large volumes. ⚠️ ONE SESSION IS ONE DATA POINT. Sweat rate changes with temperature, humidity, intensity, clothing and how acclimatised you are - it is not a fixed personal constant. A figure measured on a cool easy run tells you very little about a hot hard one. Measure in the conditions you care about, and more than once. SOME WEIGHT CHANGE IS NOT WATER. Fuel burned and respiratory losses contribute a little, so a session's weight change slightly overstates sweat. It is small over an hour or two and grows over very long efforts, which is one reason this arithmetic is a guide rather than a measurement. ⚠️ CONFUSION, HEADACHE, NAUSEA OR SWELLING DURING OR AFTER A LONG EVENT NEEDS URGENT MEDICAL ATTENTION - and drinking more is exactly the wrong response if the cause is hyponatremia. It can look like dehydration. Do not guess: get help.

A session of 60 to 120 minutes gives a more reliable figure than a very short one. The reason to measure a sweat rate at all is to know roughly what your body does, to spot an extreme, and to plan how much fluid to CARRY on a long or remote session. It is not to replace thirst with a stopwatch and a quota, which is closer to the behaviour that causes trouble.
Do I need sodium as well?
For sessions longer than about an hour, including sodium at roughly 0.5 to 0.7 grams per litre of fluid is recommended. It improves how the drink tastes, which matters more than it sounds when you have hours of it ahead, helps your body hold onto the fluid rather than passing it straight through, and may help prevent hyponatremia in people who drink large volumes. The tool works the amount out for your planned session at 0.6 grams per litre, the middle of that range. For a short session in cool conditions it makes very little difference.
Will my sweat rate stay the same?
No, and treating it as a fixed personal constant is a mistake. It changes with temperature, humidity, exercise intensity, what you are wearing and how acclimatised you are - and acclimatisation itself shifts it over a couple of weeks in a new climate. A figure measured on a cool easy run tells you very little about a hot hard one, which is the session where getting it wrong matters most. Measure in the conditions you actually care about, and measure more than once before trusting the number for anything important.
Is all the weight I lost sweat?
Almost, but not quite. Fuel burned during the session and water lost through breathing both contribute a little, so the weight change slightly overstates true sweat loss. Over an hour or two the difference is small enough to ignore; over a very long effort it grows. This is one of several reasons the result is a working guide rather than a laboratory measurement - along with scale precision, wet kit, and whether you remembered every mouthful you took. Treat it as an estimate accurate to within a reasonable margin, not to the millilitre.
What are the warning signs during a long event?
Confusion, headache, nausea, or noticeable swelling in the hands, feet or face during or after a long event need urgent medical attention. The reason this is worth knowing in advance is that hyponatremia can LOOK like dehydration - and if you respond by drinking more, you make it substantially worse. Do not try to work out which it is from symptoms alone in the middle of an event. Get medical help, and tell whoever assesses you how much you have been drinking, because that information changes what they do.
