How this is calculated

"CURVED" IS NOT ONE METHOD. At least four are in common use and they disagree with each other substantially on the same raw mark, which is why this shows all four rather than picking one. FLAT ADJUSTMENT adds a fixed number of points to everyone. It is the simplest and the most common, and it preserves the gaps between students exactly. TOP-SCORE SCALING treats the highest mark in the class as 100 and scales everything proportionally. It is generous when the top score is low and does nothing at all when someone scored full marks. SQUARE-ROOT CURVE takes the square root of your percentage and multiplies by 10. It lifts low scores far more than high ones — 36 becomes 60, while 81 becomes 90 — so it compresses the top of the distribution. MEAN-SHIFT moves the class average to a target and moves every score by the same amount. Whether it helps you depends entirely on where you sit relative to the mean. ⚠️ ALL FOUR ARE CAPPED AT 100 HERE, because a mark above full is not a mark. That cap is what makes top-score scaling and square-root look identical for students already near the top. ⚠️ A CURVE IS NOT OWED TO YOU. Most instructors are under no obligation to curve at all, many announce it only after marking, and some curve the final course grade rather than an individual exam. This tool tells you what a given method WOULD produce. It cannot tell you which one, if any, your instructor will use. TRUE NORMING — forcing a fixed percentage into each letter grade — is deliberately not modelled. It depends on the whole distribution rather than summary statistics, so it cannot be computed from a mean and a top score.

Common questions

Which curve will my instructor use?
There is no way to tell from your score, and that is the honest answer. Most instructors are under no obligation to curve at all, many decide only after seeing the marks, and some curve the final course grade rather than the individual exam. This tool shows what each method would produce so you can see the range of plausible outcomes. Treat the spread as the uncertainty, not any single figure as your mark.
Why does the square-root curve help low scores so much?
Because the square root grows fastest near zero. A raw 36 becomes 60 — a 24-point lift — while an 81 becomes 90, a lift of 9. The effect is to compress the top of the distribution and stretch the bottom, which is exactly why instructors reach for it after an exam that went badly across the board. If you scored well it does comparatively little for you, and it can even sit below a modest flat adjustment.
Why is everything capped at 100?
Because a mark above full marks is not a mark, and almost no institution records one. The cap is also why top-score scaling and the square-root curve look identical for students already near the top: both would push past 100 and both get clipped. If your instructor genuinely allows scores above 100 — some do, for bonus questions — the uncapped figures are simple to work out by hand from the same formulas.
Does a curve ever lower my score?
A mean shift can, if the class average is already above the target. That is unusual but not unheard of on an exam that turned out easier than intended, and it is the reason mean-shift is shown with the sign preserved rather than floored at your raw mark. The other three methods here never reduce a score.
What about a curve that forces set percentages into each grade?
That is true norming, and it is deliberately not modelled here because it cannot be. It works on the whole distribution — ranking every student and cutting the list at fixed proportions — so it needs the full list of marks, not a mean and a top score. If your course uses it, your letter grade depends on your rank rather than your percentage, and no summary statistic will predict it.
