How this is calculated

Your final grade is your current grade carrying its share of the course, plus the final carrying its own. If the final is worth 30 percent, your existing work is worth the other 70. So the score you need is: take the grade you want, subtract what your current work already contributes, and divide by the final's weight. Written out: (target - current x (1 - weight)) / weight, with the weights as decimals. The best and worst possible figures are the same sum with 100 and 0 in place of the final score. They are the honest bounds on where you can still finish, and they are usually narrower than people expect. A needed score above 100 means the target is out of reach no matter how well the final goes. That is worth knowing early rather than the night before. This assumes your current grade already reflects everything except the final, and that the final is a single weighted component. A course with a separate participation mark, a dropped-lowest rule, or extra credit is not this shape.

Common questions

It says I need more than 100. What now?

The target is out of reach through the final alone. Worth finding out now: check whether any extra credit, a resubmission or a dropped-lowest rule exists, and if not, recalculate for the grade that IS reachable and aim at that instead.

Why is the range so narrow?

Because the final is usually worth far less than it feels like. At 20 percent, the gap between a perfect paper and a blank one is 20 points of final grade. Most of your grade was decided before you walked in.

Where do I find what the final is worth?

The syllabus, and it is the one number this depends on entirely. Getting it wrong by ten points changes the answer more than anything else you can enter.

Then this will be slightly off. It assumes your current grade covers everything EXCEPT the final. If your gradebook already folds in a practice exam from the same category, take that out before entering it.

Does this work for a course with participation or extra credit?

Not cleanly. It models two weighted parts — work so far, and the final. Anything that sits outside those two, or a rule that drops your lowest score, changes the shape of the sum.
