How this is calculated
The area is length times width. The waste allowance is added on top, and then that figure is divided by the coverage of one box and rounded UP, because flooring is sold in whole boxes and there is no such thing as most of one. That rounding is the part people miss. Your waste allowance is not what you end up with - the box size is. A room needing 330 square feet with 22.5 per box comes to 14.67 boxes, so you buy 15 and finish with 337.5. The real surplus is whatever the rounding gives you, which can be a lot more than you planned or barely anything, depending on how the numbers land. Ten percent suits a simple rectangular room laid straight. Add more for a room with alcoves, angles or several doorways, and add substantially more for a diagonal or herringbone layout, where every plank meeting a wall is cut at an angle and the offcuts are far less reusable. Long narrow rooms also waste more than square ones of the same area, because there are more rows meeting a wall. The coverage per box is an input rather than a built-in constant because it genuinely varies between products - there is no standard box. Read it off the box you intend to buy, and check it again if you switch product, because it is the number the whole calculation turns on. What this does not model is layout. It cannot tell you that your last row will be an awkward 20mm sliver, which is a real planning problem solved by adjusting the first row's width rather than by buying more material. It also assumes a single rectangular area - an L-shaped room should be split into rectangles and added. One box more than the calculation is the standard advice, and the reason is not waste. It is dye lots: boards from a different production run can differ subtly in shade and pattern, and matching one months later is often impossible.

- Why is my real margin different from the waste allowance I entered?
- Because you buy whole boxes. The allowance decides what you shop for; the box size decides what you go home with. A 300 square foot room at 10 percent needs 330, which at 22.5 per box is 14.67 boxes - so you buy 15 and get 337.5, a real margin of 12.5 percent rather than 10. Depending on how the numbers land, the rounding can hand you a lot of extra or almost none, which is exactly why the leftover figure is worth looking at before deciding whether to add a spare box.
- How much waste should I allow?
- Ten percent for a simple rectangular room laid straight with the planks. Fifteen for a room with alcoves, angles or several doorways. Twenty or more for a diagonal or herringbone layout, where every plank meeting a wall is cut at an angle and the offcuts are much harder to reuse elsewhere. Long narrow rooms also waste more than square ones of the same area, because there are more rows ending at a wall.
- Why isn't the box coverage built in?
- Because there is no standard. Coverage per box varies genuinely between products and manufacturers, and it is the number the entire calculation turns on - a built-in figure would be wrong for most readers while looking authoritative. Read it off the box you actually intend to buy, and re-check it if you change product part-way through choosing.
- Should I buy an extra box?
- Usually yes, and the reason is not waste - it is dye lots. Boards from a different production run can differ subtly in shade and pattern, and matching one a few months later is often impossible. A spare box means a damaged plank is a twenty minute repair rather than a visible patch or a whole new floor. Look at the leftover figure first, though: if the rounding already gave you nearly a full box, you may not need another.
- My room is L-shaped.
- Split it into rectangles, work each one out, and add the areas before applying waste. Do not measure the overall bounding box of an L-shaped room - that includes floor that does not exist and will have you buying material for a corner of the house that is not there.
- Will my last row be a thin sliver?
- Possibly, and this calculation cannot tell you - it knows area, not layout. The fix is not more material anyway: if the final row works out uncomfortably narrow, the standard solution is to trim the FIRST row so the first and last are a similar, sensible width. Work that out on paper before opening a single box, because it is much harder to fix halfway across the room.
