Before you start brewing
- Ingredients counted per BATCH of three, not per potion
- Upgrade decided — redstone OR glowstone, never both
- Lingering costed at two extra stages, not one
- Blaze powder counted against STAGES, not potions
- Water bottles ready — three per batch
- Target rounded up to a multiple of three, since the spares are free
- Effect ingredient crafting checked (a blaze rod makes two powder)
- Stands set up in advance if the batch is large
The mistake everyone makes
Counting ingredients per potion instead of per batch. A single ingredient is consumed for all three bottles, so twenty-one potions need seven nether wart, seven of the effect ingredient and seven gunpowder — not twenty-one of each. A single stack of nether wart covers 192 potions, which is why the Nether trip you are planning is probably unnecessary.
Blaze powder counts stages
One powder fuels twenty operations and every stage counts as one of them. At four stages a batch that is five complete batches — fifteen finished potions per powder. A one-stage awkward potion would get sixty batches from the same piece. If your stand keeps running dry mid-session, this is the arithmetic that explains it.
