How this is calculated
ONE INGREDIENT BREWS THREE POTIONS. The brewing stand has three bottle slots and a single ingredient is consumed for the whole batch, so twenty-one potions take SEVEN nether wart rather than twenty-one. This is the single most over-farmed resource in the game and the reason this calculator is worth running before a trip to the Nether. ⚠️ EVERY STAGE IS A SEPARATE 20-SECOND BREW. Nether wart into water bottles is one stage. The effect ingredient is a second. Redstone or glowstone is a third. Gunpowder is a fourth. An extended splash potion is therefore FOUR full brewing cycles, not one - which is where the time estimate comes from and why brewing feels so much slower than people expect. ⚠️ REDSTONE AND GLOWSTONE ARE MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE. You cannot have both duration and potency on the same potion - the wiki's wording is that a potion with an enhanced effect has shorter duration, and a potion with extended duration cannot have an enhanced effect. This tool makes that structural by offering the upgrade as a single choice rather than two tick boxes, so an impossible combination cannot be entered. LINGERING COSTS TWO EXTRA STAGES, not one. A lingering potion is made from a SPLASH potion plus dragon's breath, so you pay for the gunpowder stage and the dragon's breath stage. Selecting lingering here counts both. BLAZE POWDER FUELS 20 BREWING OPERATIONS, and stages count separately - so a single blaze powder covers twenty stages, not twenty potions. The four-stage recipes burn through it about five times faster than a plain awkward potion would suggest. POTIONS COME IN THREES, so asking for a number that is not a multiple of three rounds up and leaves you with spares. The tool reports the leftovers rather than hiding them, because they are free and worth taking. ⚠️ RUNNING MORE STANDS SAVES TIME BUT COSTS MORE FUEL. Each stand works one batch of three through all its stages, so the batches are shared out and the wall-clock time drops - but a PART-USED ROUND STILL COSTS A FULL ROUND, so seven batches across three stands is three rounds rather than 2.33. Fuel goes the other way: blaze powder sits in each stand's own fuel slot, so three stands need three pieces even when the total work would fit in two. That is why the powder figure can RISE when you add stands, and it is the honest answer rather than a bug. The time figure still does not model you walking between stands or restocking, so treat it as a floor rather than a schedule. BASE INGREDIENT AMOUNTS ONLY. This counts how many of each ingredient TYPE you need. It does not know whether your effect ingredient is a blaze rod, a ghast tear or a pufferfish, and it does not model the extra crafting some of those need - a blaze rod makes two blaze powder, for instance.

- How much nether wart do I really need?
- One per batch of three potions, which is the fact worth taking away from this page. The brewing stand holds three bottles and consumes a single ingredient for the whole batch, so twenty-one potions need seven nether wart rather than twenty-one. The same is true of your effect ingredient, your redstone or glowstone, and your gunpowder - all of them are one per batch. Nether wart is the most over-farmed resource in the game precisely because people count it per potion, and a single stack of 64 is enough for 192 potions.
- Why does brewing take so long?
- Because every stage is a separate 20-second brew, and the good potions have four of them. Nether wart into water bottles is the first, the effect ingredient is the second, redstone or glowstone is the third, and gunpowder is the fourth - so an extended splash potion is four full cycles per batch, or 80 seconds of standing about. Twenty potions works out at seven batches and 28 operations, which is over nine minutes of real time. Running more than one stand is the only way to speed it up, since the stages themselves are fixed.
- Can I use redstone and glowstone on the same potion?
- No, and this tool is built so you cannot ask for it. They are mutually exclusive by design: a potion with an enhanced effect has a shorter duration, and one with extended duration cannot have an enhanced effect. Applying the second one replaces rather than adds to the first. That is why the upgrade is offered here as a single choice rather than two separate tick boxes - an impossible shopping list is worse than no shopping list, and encoding the rule in the input means it cannot be entered wrong.
- Why does lingering cost two extra stages?
- Because a lingering potion is made from a splash potion, not from a drinkable one. You brew gunpowder in to make it splash, then dragon's breath in to make it linger - two separate operations, each taking its own 20 seconds and its own slot of blaze powder fuel. Selecting lingering here counts both, and reports that you need the same number of gunpowder AND dragon's breath. It is the most expensive form in both time and fuel, which is worth knowing before committing to a big batch of them.
- How far does one blaze powder go?
- Twenty brewing operations, with each stage counting separately - so it is twenty STAGES, not twenty potions. That distinction matters enormously at four stages a batch: one blaze powder covers five complete batches of an extended splash potion, which is fifteen finished potions. A plain awkward potion at one stage would get sixty batches out of the same powder. If your brewing keeps running dry, this is why, and it is the input that catches most people out when planning a session away from a blaze farm.
- Why do I get more potions than I asked for?
- Because the stand always brews three at a time, so any number that is not a multiple of three rounds up. Asking for twenty gives you seven batches and twenty-one potions, with one spare. The tool reports those spares rather than quietly hiding them, because the third bottle costs nothing extra - the ingredient was consumed for the batch regardless, so the leftover is genuinely free.
